First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has finally broken its silence over the death of Tunde Thomas, a banker and husband to FCMB Staff, Moyo Thomas, who was accused of having extra-marital affairs with Managing Director, Adamu Nuru of the aforementioned Bank.
According to report, Thomas, died of a heart attack after it emerged his wife, Moyo, had been involved in an open relationship with Nuru despite her marriage to Thomas.
Moyo, it emerged, had taken their two children abroad on the pretext of going on a vacation from where she called Thomas to inform him that the two children do not belong to him but to Nuru. She was also said to have sought asylum in the US over domestic violence.
After the news was broken to Thomas, he had a stroke from which he recovered and got engaged to another woman. Reports said Thomas died the day he was scheduled to meet his new fiancee’s parents.
Autopsy report say he died of heart failure.
Well-meaning Nigerians have taken to social media platforms to ask the board and management of FCMB to sack Nuru for lack of decorum and causing the death of an innocent person.
A petition asking the management of the bank to sack him has gotten over 400 signatures.
Twitter Thread by one TD Cole details what transpired with the trio.
But in a statement on Friday, FCMB Group Head, Corporate Affairs, Diran Olojo, said the bank was aware of the allegations making the rounds against its MD.
He, however, said the bank’s board of directors had already commenced a review into the matter, adding that its findings would be disclosed in due course.
“We are aware of several stories circulating across several media platforms about our bank’s Managing Director, Adam Nuru, a former employee Ms Moyo Thomas and her deceased ex-husband, Mr Tunde Thomas,” the statement read.
“While this is a personal matter, the tragedy of the death of Mr Tunde Thomas and the allegations of unethical conduct, require the bank’s board to conduct a review of what transpired, any violations of our code of ethics and the adequacy of these code of conduct ethics. This will be done immediately,” the bank said.
“We enjoin all our stakeholders to bear with us as we conduct this review and to please respect the various families involved.
“Our Board of Directors are reviewing all aspects of this report and once they are done with their review, we will revert to you.”
Kaduna State Police Command has arrested 20-year old mother, Faith Alhassan, over alleged murder of her one-year-old daughter.
Faith threw her child in the well allegedly to enable her marry her former boyfriend who was not ready to accept her with a baby.
Faith, a Secondary School certificate holder, said has no idea what came over her.
The Police disclosed that, on 28th December 2020 at about 7 am, the corpse of a baby girl was found in a well at Gantan village of Kachia local government area of the State.
The police further informed that, upon receipt of the report, an investigation was carried out and it was discovered that the mother of the dead baby girl was the culprit, The Nation reports.
According to the police, the culprit went into Gantan village with her baby girl to meet her former boyfriend by the name Dolan Yakubu whom she jilted years back.
The police said Faith told them that while at her ex-boyfriend’s house, his father complained of the baby so she went quietly in the night to dump the baby in the well.

The young lady who said she stays with her grandmother, also disclosed she doesn’t know the whereabouts of her dead daughter’s father.
When asked why she was at the police command, she said, “I am here because of my daughter that I threw into the well and she died. I don’t know what came over me when I carried out the act”.
Asked whether it was because she wanted to marry her ex-boyfriend that she killed her daughter, she said in tears, “I did not kill her because I want to marry, I just don’t know what entered me, I am not happy for doing it.”
The Kaduna State Police Commissioner CP Umar M. Muri said she will be arraigned in court upon completion of the investigation.
No fewer than 430,000 Poor Nigerians would benefit from the United Kingdom £7 million aid to immediately provide food, nutrition, water and shelter for vulnerable families in Nigeria.
A statement by the British High Commission in Nigeria, said the fund will be made available to Nigeria through the World Food Programme. It said the fund is estimated to reach 430,000 Nigerians with unconditional food assistance and nutrition support for 108 days.
It said the UK is also lobbying international donors to provide more funding and calling for all conflict parties to allow safe, sustained, and unhindered humanitarian access to all people in need of assistance; including 1.24m people the UN estimate are living in areas currently inaccessible to humanitarian actors due to insecurity in the northeast.
Gill Atkinson, the Acting High Commissioner at the British High Commission said: “I’m pleased that the UK is making this additional commitment of a further £7m in humanitarian aid in Nigeria. It demonstrates how dedicated we are to helping provide continued lifesaving support to people who need it in Nigeria.
“It is imperative we prevent a further deterioration in food insecurity in the NE and vital we work in partnership with the Nigerian government to mitigate further decline in the situation. We encourage other donors to do likewise. Thanks as ever go to our UN and NGO partners who deliver lifesaving UKAID on behalf of the well wishes of the British people.”
President Muhammadu Buhari has addressed Nigerians on burning national issues stating that the progress made by his administration was not sufficient going by the expectations of Nigerians.
Mr President also promised to re-energise and reorganize the nation’s security apparatus and personnel of the Armed Forces and the police with a view to enhancing their capacity to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups waging war against some communities in some parts of the country.
President Buhari, in his New Year message to Nigerians, assured the youths that he was committed to fulfilling the demands they made in the wake of the #EndSARS protests.
His Message
The message read thus: “My fellow countrymen and women, first, I will like to thank and praise the Almighty, who saw us through the year 2020 and has given us the opportunity to witness the start of another new year. We especially thank God because the year 2020 was one of the most trying years since our existence as a nation.
“This can also be said about all other nations around the world, due to the challenges imposed on our collective humanity by the novel COVID-19 pandemic.
“While acknowledging that 2020 was a very tough year, we saw this year put to the test our national resilience and ability to survive these tough times and also gave renewed hope that we will again brave any storm that lay ahead in 2021 and beyond.
“As we celebrate the opportunity before us in this New Year 2021, we must also acknowledge the passing of our brothers and sisters who didn’t make it into this New Year. May their souls rest in perfect peace.
” We must remember that we also celebrated the historic occasion of our sixty years as an independent and sovereign country on October 1, 2020. In the spirit of hope and gratitude, I would like to remind us again that as a country on the difficult journey to nationhood and greatness, we have confounded the many pundits at home and around the world who never gave the newly-born country that emerged unto the world stage on October 1, 1960, a chance of surviving much longer than a few years.
“Yet, here we are, 61 years by the next anniversary in October, and not only are we here, we are standing tall in the comity of nations as one country united under the will of God and also actively growing that indivisible Nigerian spirit that has enabled us, year after year, decade after decade, to weather all stormy waters and emerge stronger and better where others have fallen and disintegrated. This nation, this Nigeria will survive and thrive.
ENDSARS
“In this journey to nationhood, we have experienced the highs and lows. 2020 indeed came with a lot of challenges ranging from security and economic issues across the regions to understandable protests that were mainly led by our youths and served notice to the demand for police reforms and accountability.
“This government heard, this government listened and this government is committed to fulfilling the five demands of our youths, fully understanding that we all wish well for Nigeria.
“In the midst of all these challenges, I had initially pledged that as your elected President and Commander-in-Chief, I would ensure that these ongoing challenges will be faced head-on with renewed determination and with all the appropriateness and urgency required.
“Your voices have been heard and we would continue to listen to you, and all the key stakeholders who are committed to the unity of Nigeria to ensure that every region of this nation is safe for us all, while guaranteeing that the future is also secure for the coming generation.
“wish to also use this occasion of New Year to reaffirm my commitment to the people of Nigeria, especially the youth who need our collective encouragement and support. In securing this nation we need to secure the future of our youth.
“Our young people are our most valuable natural resource, at home and abroad. Their ingenuity, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit is evident to all. Many of our young people are excelling in various spheres of life including sports, entertainment, information and communication technology, commerce and are globally recognised as achievers.
“As a Government we are committed to actively engaging with the creative energies of our young people. In this regard, we will partner with the legislature to develop an enabling environment to turn their passions into ideas that can be supported, groomed and scaled across regions. This will create vast opportunities in fintech, agriculture, business process start-ups and in the entertainment industry.
Priorities
“The year 2021 will, indeed, be a year where we will work to reinforce the hopes of fellow Nigerians in the vision of a united and progressive Nigeria. This administration would continue focusing on delivering key strategic priorities under our “SEA” – (Security, Economy and Anti-Corruption) Agenda.”
The President highlighted some of the key priority areas his administration would direct attention and strengths to.
Among them he said was on the security.
According to him, “Re-energising and reorganising the security apparatus and personnel of the armed forces and the police with a view to enhance their capacity to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups waging war against our communities in some parts of the country.
“In line with the current security challenges, we are facing as a Nation, I would like to reiterate the promise I made recently when over 300 of our boys abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, were successfully rescued by our security operatives.
“The professionalism shown by our security forces and the collaboration from all stakeholders across both State and Federal Governments that led to the successful rescue of the boys is proof that Nigeria has the internal capacity to decisively deal with terror attacks on our citizens.
“However, we recognise that we rapidly have to move to a more proactive and preemptive posture to ensure that these sorts of traumatic incidents do not become a norm. Our administration is fully aware of the responsibility we have to protect the lives and properties of all Nigerians, and we will not relent in learning and adapting to changing threats to our national security and civic wellbeing.”
Economy
On the economy, the President said that the focus was on revamping the economy through the national economic diversification agenda that supports the primary goal of national food self-sufficiency.
He said: “This has helped reduced the growing food related inflationary figures and have in considerable measure positively impacted our food security status during the long months of the pandemic lockdown.
“We are also currently rebuilding our national infrastructure base and, in the process, introducing transformation through the rehabilitation, modernisation, and expansion of the railway system, national roads and bridges both in rural and urban centres, alongside the airports and seaports.
“The reforms we have put in place in the power sector would guarantee increased efficiency in our drive to significantly expand the generation and distribution of electricity for use in homes and factories.
“As an administration we are currently undertaking a series of special interventions designed to boost job creation and support the entrepreneurial drive of our youths.
” With the recent opening of our borders, we expect that the pent-up demand of legitimate cross-border and international trade will boost the fortunes of the many small businesses and agricultural enterprises that depend on Nigeria’s trade and commerce.
” The message to our West African neighbours is that Nigeria is once again fully open for those willing to conduct business in a fair and equitable way.”
Anti-corruption
On anti-corruption, President Buhari said: “While we would be working with the Legislature to enact laws that would strengthen this fight, we would also be looking at reviewing some of our laws which would ensure that this fight is more effective.
“On the part of the executive, we would ensure the diligent and timely prosecution of corruption cases, while appealing to the judiciary to ensure that corruption cases are dispensed with expeditiously.
“The persistence of various forms of violence has meant that in the most affected parts of the country, the fabric of inter-communal harmony woven through years of investment of effort at building trust, mutual respect, and harmony has been threatened.
“Insecurity as a challenge has direct repercussions on our national economic stability, growth, and development, setting us back at critical points through the destruction of public and private investments.
“In parts of the country where chronic poverty, social exclusion, and disillusionment among sections of the youth were already a problem, the cycles of violence that have been unleashed by mindless groups like Boko Haram and others have thwarted the efforts of government to undertake the social policy and associated investments that could make a huge difference in the quality of life of our citizens.
““I am aware that for some of our compatriots, the progress we have registered since the inception of this administration is not nearly as fast or as sufficient as they would wish. I do not begrudge them their views in so far as they signify a wish, in which we all share, for only the very best for our country.
‘…before we came’
“Nevertheless, I call upon all Nigerians to carefully recall the circumstances of our coming to office, the facts on the ground and the resources at our disposal since 2015 with the accomplishments of this administration.
“As a people, we have shown admirable resilience in the face of every adversity, an unmatched capacity to recover speedily from every setback, an unparalleled generosity of spirit when we resolve our differences, and a constant readiness to invest faith and hope in the destiny we share as a united country built on the diversity of its peoples.
“It is these attributes that underpin the Nigerian spirit of ‘can-do, will-do’ that gives me hope that we shall yet get to destination and fulfill our calling together, especially with the solid resolutions we are setting in this new year.
“Keeping our country on a forward march is a duty which we all have and share. In this regard, keeping our country safe from a resurgent cycle of COVID-19 as this administration finalises its plans to procure and efficiently and effectively distribute the COVID-19 vaccines, I urge you all fellow citizens to observe strict COVID-19 prevention protocols.
“As your elected President, my pledge to you is the same as it has always been; I will play my part fully and without fear or favour. I invite all of us to do the same.
“It is what we owe to the founding generation of our beloved country and also to the coming generation. It is what we desire for national prosperity for all demands.”
Prof. Job Nmadu of Federal University of technology, Minna, says the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU)’s nine months strike in 2020, impacted negatively on university communities by crippling their economic activities.
Nmadu said this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja. According to him, those affected by the strike, numbering about 20 million, included traders, landlords, hoteliers, transporters and many others.
Nmadu, a professor of Agricultural Economics, said that the impact of the strike was devastating.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared a two-week warning strike and the strike became full fledged on March 20.
“With the COVID-19 lockdown, the impact of the strike was not initially felt at the national level.
“However, stakeholders in the university communities including traders, landlords, transporters and many others, started feeling the pinch of the strike almost immediately.
“The strike battered the economy of the communities with a population of about 20 million people,” he said.
The don, also President, Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists (NAAE), said that other factors also contributed negatively to the country’s economy in 2020.
He named them to include COVID-19 pandemic, crude oil price crash, violent crimes, #ENDSARS protest, flood among others.
He, however, expressed optimism that there would be turn around in 2021, adding that, “the year is crucial to economic recovery of Nigeria.
“Nigeria was no doubt stressed in 2020 but those stressors must be removed in 2021.
“This is to ensure steady and sustainable economic growth as well as well-planned industrial development so as to attain the 2030 Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs) target.
“Also, inflation management should be overhauled.
“A reformed economic team would ensure that prices of goods and services are brought down to atleast 50 per cent their current rate,” he said.
It is common for prophets, pastors, and other clerics to make bold prophecies at the end of every year or beginning of a new one. Expectedly, the year 2020 was not short of such prophecies.
These prophecies are often received with faith by Christians all over the country.
According to the Central Intelligence Agency World Factbook, Nigeria is one of the most religious countries of the world.
A 2018 research by the Pew Research Center found that Nigeria had the sixth-largest Christian population (87 million) and the fifth-largest Muslim population (90 million) in the world.
The prophecies are customarily focused on politics, economy, natural disasters and general optimistic predictions about church members’ futures.
However, while some of the prophecies they make are fulfilled, many others miss the mark.
For instance, 2020 came with a lot of uncertainty, ailments, deaths, job losses and hardship for many people worldwide, no thanks to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Its impact so shocked the world that even clerics did not see it coming.
Pastor Enoch Adeboye
On his part, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, said earthquakes and volcanoes had been dormant in his 2020 prophecies for years would activate.
He said, “This year (2020) unless you pray very hard, it is going to behave like a child that is having a convulsion. Earthquakes and volcanoes that have been dormant for years will erupt because of sin, which is becoming more rampant.”
However, a report in the Volcano Discovery for 2020 confirmed fewer earthquakes with higher magnitudes recorded over previous years.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazard Program on its website recorded only about 26 earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.5 and above, with a total of over 100 earthquake occurrences worldwide. It was also gathered that 2020 was the first year since 2016, with no magnitude 8+ earthquakes as only nine major earthquakes occurred. Also, Adeboye said 2020 would be a year of series of joy, but many Nigerians have described the year as one of the most sorrowful ones they have ever witnessed.
Pastor T. B. Joshua
Founder of the Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN), was slammed in several quarters after his prophecy that the coronavirus pandemic would end on March 27, 2020, was not fulfilled.
Months after, the killer virus has continued to affect several countries with a second wave of the novel disease currently making the headlines.
Chris Oyakhilome
Founder of LoveWorld Incorporated, popularly known as Christ Embassy, Chris Oyakhilome, earlier predicted that 2020 would be a year of perfection. But the year has been far from being perfect. Barely three months into the year, Oyakhilome himself shared theories about an alleged connection between 5G network and COVID-19.
David Oyedepo
The Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church, David Oyedepo, predicted that 2020 would be a year of breaking limits. This, however, was in sharp contrast to the realities that characterised the year.
Williams Kumuyi
Earlier in the year, founder of Deeper Life Bible Church, Williams Kumuyi, told his congregation that 2020 would be the best year they had ever lived.
“This year will be the best you have ever lived in your life,” Kumuyi said. But the year has unarguably been a tough year laced with several challenges.
Apostle Johnson Suleman
Similarly, the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International, Johnson Suleman, had said earlier in his new year declaration: “In the year 2020, you shall not lack money, you shall move from glory to glory, from grace to grace, from good to better, from better to best.”
Members of his congregation could attest to the fact that in 2020, there was widespread hardship as the economy struggled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Wale Olagunju
The presiding Bishop of Divine Seed of God Chapel Ministry, Ibadan, Oyo State, Wale Olagunju, also disclosed that the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai; his Ekiti State counterpart, Kayode Fayemi, and about 70 per cent of the members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, might dump the party. This is yet to be fulfilled even as the year comes to an end.
Olagunju also said the Queen of England should count her days, suggesting her last moments were near. Elizabeth II, however, reportedly celebrated the last Christmas with her family at their royal home, Windsor Castle in London.
He added, “As revealed to me by the Almighty God, if (Ayo) Fayose and his PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) fail to reconcile with Senator (Abiodun) Olujimi now, Olujimi will surely decamp to APC (All Progressives Congress).” Though there were reports that the senator representing Ekiti South Constituency threatened to defect to the APC, her media aide, Atofarati Santa, said Olujimi was still the PDP leader in the state and the highest-ranking political office holder and had nothing to do with the APC.
The prophet missed the mark when he said God revealed to him that, should Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State defect to another party, he would lose the 2020 election.
Obaseki defected from the APC to the PDP in June 2020 and emerged victorious in the state governorship election.
He added, “The Living God says that President Donald Trump is a candidate to beat in the USA 2020 presidential election. With a little prayer, Donald Trump will win the election.”
At the heat of the US election, the spiritual adviser to Trump, Paula White, called on “angelic reinforcement” from the continents of Africa and South America to give Trump victory. At the moment, Joe Biden remains the president-elect of the United States of America.
Huxley Bushiri
The leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church, South Africa, Huxley Bushiri, had at the beginning of the year, declared that God took him into all the months in 2020 and he could see that the year was great.
However, the self-acclaimed prophet was accused of money laundering and fraud and his wife, Mary, and two others. Crime investigators say the case involves ZAR102 million ($6.6m; £5m). Just last month, Bushiri fled South Africa to Malawi. In the year he described as great, Bushiri was tagged a ‘fugitive’.
Emmanuel Omale
The founder of the Divine Hand of God Prophetic Ministry, Emmanuel Omale, had in December 2019 prophesied that the former acting chairman of the Economic and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, would be confirmed as the substantive chairman of the agency in 2020.
In his prophetic declaration, the pastor was reported to have said: “President (Muhammadu) Buhari has seen the great success of his war on corruption under Ibrahim Magu and he will submit his name for re-appointment and confirmation despite massive gang-up.”
On the contrary, Magu has not only been suspended by President Buhari. He was probed by a panel set up by the government on alleged infractions he had committed. Buhari received the final report of the Justice Ayo Salami-led probe panel in November 2020.
Babatunde Ayodele
The founder of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Lagos, Babatunde Ayodele, said, “Democracy will cause many problems and will break Nigeria. “I foresee a future referendum coming,” he says. As at the time of compiling this report, this prophecy has yet to be fulfilled.
Ayodele said the government of President Buhari would expose some former governors for corruption in 2020. Instead, a former governor who had been on trial for a long time now, Orji Kalu, got out of jail.
“APC will rise against the government. Some government agencies will be scrapped due to internal inefficiencies,” he said.
Ayodele had also said the government would embark on new methods of securing the state. “There will be an attack on herdsmen. The president must pray to rebuke troubles. Nigeria will be concerned about the security challenges confronting the country. Nigeria will make security dominant in the country.”
In 2020, Nigeria has experienced banditry, kidnappings, killings among other forms of insecurity on a large scale.
The prophet said he foresaw the Presidential Villa moved from its present location to another place where a new one would be built. The Presidential Villa is still in Abuja.
“Apart from this, Nigeria will experience what they have not been experiencing before. I foresee earthquakes, landslides and earth tremor in Nigeria.” On the contrary, Nigeria has not recorded any earthquake in the last 365 days, according to an Earthquake Track Website report.
Paul Okikijesu
Prophet of Christ Apostolic Miracle Ministry, Paul Okikijesu, released his 2020 prophecies in November 2019 that “angels are presently in sixty-nine countries and they will enter one hundred and twenty-four countries by Sunday (November 22, 2020). By the end of this month (November 2020), they will have entered numerous countries throughout the world, and you will hear the news that the Almighty God is presently angry. The event that has never happened before will occur, and you will hear that the angels are physically pronouncing judgment, and they are passing throughout the world. If this does not happen, then I am no longer God.”
The world has yet to hear the news that angels are physically pronouncing judgement as he had claimed, except it is supernatural.
Okikijesu also prophesied that God would eradicate the COVID-19 pandemic by July 2020. Nigeria is currently grappling with the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic and many health workers have lost their lives in the course of carrying out their duties.
The NMA chairman, Abuja chapter confirmed the death of 20 medical doctors recently.
“Death of an Ex-President: Thus says the Lord of hosts. An ex-President will die and his death will shake people and make them afraid; write it down today. If this does not happen, I am not God anymore,” the prophet said. No Nigerian ex-president died in the year 2020.
Nigerians react
Many Nigerians have reacted to the prophecies. Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, recently took to his Instagram page to lambast Nigerian clerics over their prophecies for 2020.
He wrote, “Look at all these fake preachers; charlatans called men of God. Con men and bastards.
“The God of feeble mumu people. The most dangerous among us dressed as angels and we learn too late they are the devil in disguise.
“Man up my people, next year – 2021 – will be tough and rugged, no let any useless pastor tell you otherwise.”
While many people attacked him, explaining to him how the year 2020 was their best year, others agreed with him.
For instance, @2niterabbai said on Instagram, “They are all saying what the people want to hear. Not real.”
Another Instagram user, @syno_funds, said, “Na dat South African pastor wey enter all the month for 2020 and him no see lockdown/coronavirus. Dat one weak me (A South African pastor said he was taken through all the months in 2020 and he didn’t see that the world would have coronavirus pandemic).”
Also, @Itz_colinz wrote, “One of our fundamental problems is religion in this country, thank God say l don get sense, nobody fit take me play (I’m wise now; nobody can scam me); l believe in reaping the fruits of my hard work, not in some manipulative or delusional talk.”

Media Aide to Cross River State Governor, Hon Solomon Akongfe Aboh man has been accused of sexually molested and assaulted a woman in search of a job.
The accusation was raised by a public speaker and youth advocate, Solomon Valentine, who shared photos of the woman with a bleeding face and wrote: “She was brought to Calabar by the SA @AbohHon on the grounds that he will give her a job with cali air.
“He now kept her and started making sexual advances at her when she refused this is the result. This is not the first.”
Sharing a photo of the media aide’s ID card, Solomon added: “She has been sexually molested by her boss severely when she requested for money to enable her travel back to Lagos where her parents stay @AbohHon Hon.Aboh,Solomon attempted to kill her. Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday heard that the University of Ibadan (UI) operated two modes of admission around 1976 when Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, gained admission into the institution.
An Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr. Emmanuel Balogun, who said he was admitted into UI in 1975, explained that the institution combined direct entry with the preliminary admission (prelim) modes.
Balogun was cross-examined as the third plaintiffs’ witness in the suit by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Edobor Williams (a member of the party) against Obaseki, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The APC and Edobor are, by their suit, querying among others, the authenticity of Obaseki’s academic credentials, particularly his first degree certificate which he claimed to have been issued by UI.
Balogun, who said he was admitted into UI through the prelim mode after writing and passing the school’s concessional examination, added that while those admitted through prelim spent a minimum of four years, those who entered through direct entry spent a minimum of three years.
The witness, who studied Agricultural Economics, said though subject combination for admission varied according to faculty, there was the basic and general requirement which every student must possess to be eligible for admission.
Balogun, who has not worked in the Admission Office of UNILAG since he was employed in September 2006, said his colleagues in UI, who he claimed to have consulted before attending court, do not determine the requirements for admission in UI.
He said: “I can’t remember if any of those my colleagues I consulted were admitted through the direct entry. Though UI has an Admission Office, he never worked there.”
The plaintiffs’ lead lawyer, Akin Olujinmi (SAN), tendered Balogun’s original degree certificate in Agricultural Economics issued by UI on July 6, 1979, which the court admitted and marked as Exhibit PL4.
Justice Ahmed Mohammed however rejected Olujinmi’s request that the original certificate, already admitted, be substituted with a photocopy. Olujinmi had hinged his request on the grounds that the original certificate was a precious document to the owner, and it could be rendered valueless if tampered with.
Also, Olujinmi tendered through the fourth plaintiffs’ witness (PW4), Raphael Onwuzuligbo Amachukwu (a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police and Forensic Document Examiner), report of evaluation of copies of the university certificate allegedly submitted by Obaseki to INEC before the last governorship election.
Justice Mohammed accepted the document, but said the determination of whether or not it is admissible would be made at the point of writing judgment.
He adjourned till 12 noon today for the defence to cross examine PW4 and continuation of trial.
