Unilorin Bags World Best in Subject Rankings

The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has been listed among the world best universities in 11 subjects/disciplines, as contained in the Time Higher Education 2023 Subject Rankings released on Oct. 25.

Prof. Peter Okebukola, the Chairman, Nigerian Universities Ranking Advisory Committee (NURAC), confirmed this according to the Unilorin Bulletin issued on Monday.

Okebukola is the Chairman, Governing Council, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and a former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

According to the Bulletin, four distinguished academic staff members of Unilorin were listed among two per cent of top scientists from Nigeria ranked among topnotch researchers worldwide.

“The institution was ranked best among the 48 Nigerian universities captured in the latest evaluation exercise, known as the World Universities Rankings, based on universal and meticulous yardsticks of measuring services offered in ivory towers.

“Five Faculties of the University of Ilorin were rated highly through the evaluation of the quality of services obtainable in each of them.

“The Faculties are Social Sciences, Engineering, Law, Clinical and Health Sciences, Life Sciences as well as Physical Sciences,” it said.

According to the publication, Okebukola also commended the Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Adamu Rasheed, for his consistent efforts in ensuring that the nation’s university system regained its credibility.

Similarly, the publication stated that four distinguished academic staff of Unilorin have been listed among two per cent of top scientists from Nigeria ranked among topnotch researchers worldwide.

It said the award-winning scholars, who made the list based on the rating of the Stanford University publication for the year 2022, are Prof. Kayode Oyewumi, the Dean of Faculty of Physical Sciences.

The other persons are Prof. Musa Yakubu, the Dean of Student Affairs, the 2021 Unilorin Researchers of the Year; Dr George Adeniyi, and Dr Kazeem Adeyemi of the Faculty of Agriculture.

Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, the Vice Chancellor of Unilorin in his reaction to the development, said he was pleased with the news.

Egbewole said the global ranking has confirmed that Unilorin is doing very well in teaching and learning as well as in research and community services.

He added that his administration was committed to ensuring that the institution secures better ratings whenever similar reports are presented.

He restated his determination to “make the University of Ilorin the best in Nigeria, one of the 10 frontline universities in Africa and among the best 500 across the world”. (NAN)

  • “I Was Shot At The Head During Abduction Process”, ex-UI DVC Speaks

Hours after regaining his freedom, the professor of political science and former deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Adigun Agbaje, has thanked Nigerians for their concerns before he was released by kidnappers.

“It’s a new day today and I’m happy to be alive. I was released by my kidnappers yesterday (Sunday) evening after spending two nights in the thick forests of Ogun and Oyo states. My mind goes to the five others who are still left with the kidnappers: two young ladies, two young men and a middle aged person. I was shot at in the head during the abduction process.

“I thank God that the bullet that went through my car’s windscreen left only a skin deep wound on my head even though it left a gaping hole in the cap I was wearing. I did not even know about this till Saturday morning when I saw caked blood on my cap.

“I am undergoing comprehensive health checks and so it may take some time to thank all my family, including my in-laws, friends and in-laws to my children, my own friends, colleagues and all Nigerians.

“For now I want to thank the following: former and current vice chancellors of the University of Ibadan: Prof Olufemi Bamiro, Prof Isaac Adewole, Prof Idowu Olayinka and Prof Kayode Adebowale, my colleagues at the University of Ibadan and other universities at home and abroad, current and former students, including Mr Fisayo Soyombo, for their wonderful support and generosity to my family, top government, military, and other security officials.

“I am quite grateful for all your efforts. You all kept hope alive and ensured that the sensitive negotiations came to a successful end when I regained freedom yesterday (Sunday) evening. As stated earlier, my heart goes to those young female undergraduates, the young men and the middle-aged persons I left behind with the kidnappers. I may not be reachable now but as soon as I get medical clearance from my doctors, I will be thanking all of you personally,” he said on Monday.

The PUNCH reports that Prof Agbaje, who is currently on sabbatical at Olabisi Onabanjo University, was on his way to Ibadan at about 6pm on Friday when kidnappers blocked his way near Sat Guru Maharaji Garden.

The kidnappers reportedly “eliminated some policemen around the scene” before making away with their captives.

He regained his freedom on Sunday alongside two students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic amid unconfirmed ransom reports.

  • Terror Alert: NSA Speaks After Security Meeting With President Buhari

Following the recent security advisories by the United States and the United Kingdom, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno has assured Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm.

The NSA, who said the situation is under control, described as false and irresponsible the perception of heightened insecurity in Abuja as painted by the UK and the US.

Monguno made the disclosure on Monday at a briefing after a Security Council Meeting presided over by President Muhamadu Buhari at the state house.

He insisted that the alert was for American and British citizens and that the way it was released complicated the situation.

The alert, he underscored, was simply an unnecessary distraction and nothing untoward so far.

The NSA advised Nigerians to go about their daily activities without fear, saying that the security agencies are in control and that Nigeria country is safe.

In attendance at the meeting were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar, as well as the Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari.

Also in attendance were the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (rtd); Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; and Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Dingyadi.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor led the service chiefs including the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao to the meeting.

  • Taboos before Ooni’s ex-wives

    Taboos before Ooni’s ex-wives

    By Tunde Odesola

‘Let’s talk about sex’ was a monster hit released in August 1991 by an all-female, Grammy award-winning American hip-hop group, Salt-N-Pepa.

Formed in New York City in 1985, Salt-N-Pepa, in their audacious song, which is a dialogue on the dangers of unprotected sex, advocates the need to tear open the mask of shyness society wears on sex.

The album was released in an era when people were shy to disclose their HIV/AIDS statuses, but basketball superstar, Magic Johnson, had just revealed his HIV status, providing the fire for the song to blaze atop billboard charts across the world.

Curiosity kills the cat, not the journalist. In this article, I hope curiosity won’t kill me as I poke my nose into ancient palaces to dissect sex and sexuality, not among mortals, but among kings, queens and concubines cavorting in the vortex of conjugal pleasure.

Let’s talk about sex. Something doesn’t add up for the wisest of all kings, Solomon, the son of King David, to have only three children from 700 wives and 300 beddable concubines at a period when Man hadn’t discovered the wisdom of arresting semen in condom technology.

That was an age when David, Solomon’s father, sang in Psalm 128:3, “Your wife will give you many children, like a vine that produces much fruit. Your children will bring you much good, like olive branches that produce many olives.”

Did Solomon choose to have just three children? Why? Did he become impotent at some point? Was he using his phallic force mainly for pleasure and rarely for procreation? Is the Holy Bible silent over the actual number of Solomon’s children? Questions rhetoric.

Do you wonder why a man would marry 700 wives and have 300 concubines? I have an answer. The son, Solomon, fathered by a lecherous king, David, who slept with a woman, Bathsheba, whose husband, Uriah, he, David, killed, must have an extraordinary libidinal appetite.

The late King of Afrobeats, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, whose hobby was sex, also had eight children from his first wives, and the 27 wives he married in 1978. Some birds surely know how to fly without perching.

I perch under the eaves of the castle of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, having just arrived on a flight from the palace of the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. I watch, I listen.

It’s six moons since Iku Baba Yeye transited to join his ancestors in the underworld. The sun is yet to dry the flood of mourning. The palace is still hollow. Oba Adeyemi’s beautiful queens can no longer get the royal heat that consummates coital pleasure. And the rains are here. So, what happens to the bereaved queens? Can they remarry?

At the eaves of the Ife palace, I listen, I watch. I see Ooni Ogunwusi seated in his imperial majesty. A fair-skinned maiden strolls in through the big gates, the king smiles and motions her with a nod to a room rightward. After some time, another fair-skinned maiden saunters in, Kabiyesi smiles again, and motions her with his irukere (horsetail) to a room leftward. Shortly afterwards, a third light-skinned maiden swaggers in, and Kabiyesi points her to a room in the hallway.

I thought the Kabiyesi would stop at three because three is a powerful number in the metaphysical realm, symbolising trinity and the three divisions of the day. The elders also say the iron tripod doesn’t spill the soup, “Àrò mẹ́ta kìí da ọbẹ̀ nù.” But I wasn’t right.

Then a beautiful dark-skinned maiden strides in through the gates, the Kabiyesi beams, and signals her to a room nearby. And, in succession, two fair-skinned maidens sashay into the palace, with the king smiling and nodding them towards their respective rooms. I listen, I watch. I see many more empty rooms.

I don’t envy the six maidens in the harem of Oba Ogunwusi because in a house where six women compete for the love of a man, five stars can collude to dim the brightness of the moon, ashes can be sweeter than salt, the ant can grow bigger than the elephant and rumours of slaps over parking lot dispute may soon wear the garb of reality with broken bottles designing maidens’ skins. So, I won’t congratulate them.

By the way, where’s the Ooni’s ex-queen from Benin, Edo State, Zainab Wuraola Otiti Obanor? I learnt the delectable Benin ex-queen has remarried and moved on with her life since divorcing the Ooni in August 2017.

Where’s ex-queen Silekunola Naomi from Akure, Ondo State? Almost one year after her celebrated divorce from Ogunwusi, Naomi has maintained a dignified low-profile, keeping her love life and social life out of scandal.

There are so many myths about kings and queens. One of such is that an oba’s wife can never remarry even if the oba is dead or divorced. What would happen to anyone who sleeps with an oba’s wife or ex-wife?

Ogunwusi, speaking through his media aide, Moses Olafare, said an ex-queen could remarry once necessary traditional rites were done to free her from the marriage covenant entered into when she was being married.

The kabiyesi said, “No woman deserves to be subjected to perpetual bondage of marriage embargo but traditional rites have to be done to avert possible ugly consequences.

“There are traditional rites of matrimonial covenant done for the queens being married and it’s only commonsensical to procedurally reverse the covenant in accordance with the spiritual traditions of such kingdoms.”

Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, said it was an abomination for anyone to take over the wife of a king, who is believed to be second-in-command to deities. Olubadan spoke through his media aide, Mr Oladele Ogunsola.

A contestant for the Alaafin of Oyo stool, retired Archbishop of Methodist Church of Nigeria, octogenarian Ayo Ladigbolu, said the wives of the late Alaafin could remarry, adding that age and self-respect could, however, prevent them from doing so.

Commenting on whether the Alaafin’s queens could remarry without undergoing cleansing rites, Ladigbolu who is a cousin to the late Adeyemi, said, “It could be abominable in view of the mysteries surrounding royal weddings and its peculiarities, aura and taboos The nature of their previous conjugation will determine the rituals involved in the cleansing rites.

On the consequences of Alaafin’s queens remarrying without undergoing certain rites, Ladigbolu said, “As in all obligatory situations, one can expect that if a royal spouse exposes her sacred embodiment to any other without due cleansing or ‘separation’, there may be unpleasant consequences the nature of which cannot be enumerated.”

A prince and former Governor of Osun State, retired Brigadier General Olagunsoye Oyinlola, however, said there was nothing wrong in an oba inheriting the harem of a departed oba. He said, “My father inherited wives from his predecessor, and my mother was one of those inherited, that’s the custom. Nothing bad happened to my father.”

A first-class oba, the Eselu of Iselu land in Ogun State, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, said a queen that went through traditional rites when marrying a king can never remarry, adding that anyone that slept with such a woman would be ruined for life.

“The wife could die after the demise of the oba. But, in a case where the woman didn’t do traditional rites, she’s free to go anywhere, she can even have extra marital affairs. The traditional rites involve taking blood samples.”

Another first-class ruler in Oyo State, the Onpetu of Ijeru land in Ogbomoso, Oba Sunday Oyediran, said wives of a departed monarch could choose to be inherited by the incoming oba or choose not to remarry, lamenting that modernisation had eroded Yoruba culture and tradition.

The Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi, said it was unorthodox for the wives of a late monarch to marry somebody else outside the palace. “It’s generally assumed that wives of departed obas will be inherited by the reigning monarch. They may not have an amorous relationship but it’s the responsibility of the monarchs to take care of them,” said the first-class ruler.

Some of the terrorists were also said to have escaped with bullet wounds while some of the soldiers also sustained some injuries during the fireworks.

  • Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: MAPOLY Students, Others Fundraise Ransom, Kidnapped Mates Released

    Punch Newspaper

Students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have started a fundraising campaign to release their colleagues who were kidnapped by gunmen along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Two MAPOLY students, Adejare Olayemi (male) and Oluwatobi Orekoya (female), and one Aminat Taiwo (female), were kidnapped on Friday on their way to Ibadan, Oyo State, alongside a former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Adigun Agbaje.

The students and the professor were reportedly picked up near the Sat Guru Maharaji Garden, Ibadan end of the expressway.

The abductors later contacted the families of the victims and demanded N50m for Agbaje, while N10m each was demanded for the students.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the President of the Students’ Union of the school, Sodiq Ajani, and his Publicity Secretary, Joy Okolie, issued a statement soliciting funds to rescue their colleagues.

Our correspondents also obtained a poster containing information and pictures of the students, which was circulated on social media and different WhatsApp groups.

A source revealed that during the negotiation with the kidnappers, they agreed to take N2m for each of the students.

He said, “We have raised the ransom of one of them, but the other person’s money has not been completed. We are looking for the money so they can be released together.”

Ajani confirmed the reduction of the ransom in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents on Sunday.

He said, “Through friends and other supports, we have raised over N900,000 as of this morning (Sunday). The money is not complete yet; we are still soliciting more financial support.

“There are only a few hours left before the deadline given by the kidnappers.

“The students’ union has reached out to the state government through the SA on students’ affairs. We have also met with the Ogun State Commissioner of Police and the Director of DSS.

“We were assured that the security agencies were working fastidiously to facilitate the release of the victims. However, the urgency and sensitivity of the matter necessitated the fundraising.

“We urge the public to save the lives of these students. Tomorrow may be too late as the ultimatum given by the captors ends today (Sunday).”

The Head of Public Relations of the institution, Yemi Ajibola, said the school had reported the case to security agencies and the state government.

He said, “As of today, I learnt the kidnappers have reduced their demand, but I will not be able to give details.”

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command has said its officers and men are combing the forests to rescue those abducted by the gunmen.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, said, “The Deputy Commissioner in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department is leading the operation. Officers and men of the command are in the bush as I talk to you and doing everything to free the victims. That is the most important thing to us now and we are working to ensure that.”

Oluwatobi’s family member, Segun Orekoya, late on Sunday, said she had been released.

He added that she was released along with her friend, Taiwo, adding that N2.2m was paid for their ransom.

He said, “It is confirmed, they were released this evening (Sunday). The two girls were released after the kidnappers collected N2. 2m.

“They are presently home with their families. I don’t have the full details, but I know they have been released.”

The student leader, Ajani, also said the male student had been released.

There were also unconfirmed reports that the professor had been released.

Efforts to confirm the development were abortive as of press time.

  • 2023: ‘Real Afenifere’ Has Made Its Position Known – Adebanjo Reacts To Tinubu’s Meeting with Fasoranti, Others

Leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has described the meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the former leader of the group and a prominent Yoruba leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, Ondo State, as diversionary.

He said the “real Afenifere” has made its position known about endorsing the candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, and that has not changed.

Pa Adebanjo said the intent was to create a wedge between him and Pa Fasoranti and he was not bothered about it.

Tinubu had met Pa Fasoranti where he presented his 80-page manifesto to the nonagenarian with other prominent Yoruba leaders in attendance.

The meeting came after Adebanjo endorsed a South-Easterner as the preferred candidate of Afenifere in 2023.

Speaking with Daily Trust, Adebanjo said Fasoranti called him over the phone yesterday and he warned him.

He said, “The Yoruba People know their leader. I’ve spoken, the National Secretary has spoken. This is no the time to engage in polemics. The way forward is my position.

“What happened was a diversion. They want us to be engaged in arguments. Is that the issue now?”

He insisted that in the interest of fairness and justice, it is the turn of the South East to produce the next President.

“Can he (Tinubu) deny it that the South-West has not had its turn? Can he deny it South-South has not had its turn? They should answer that. As far as I am concerned, the meeting does not concern us as Afenifere.

“Afenifere is not divided. That was why I said I don’t want to engage in polemics. They want to throw a wedge between me and Pa Reuben Fasoranti and I won’t allow it. The man phoned me yesterday and I warned him, don’t get yourself involved,” he said.

Adebanjo further stated that those in attendance at the meeting were Yoruba APC chieftains.
