Amotekun Commandant Confirms Death of Three Young Men Killed By Operatives in Oyo

The Commandant of the Oyo State Western Nigeria Security Network, Colonel Olayanju Olayinka said Amotekun Corps operatives killed two young men in Tapa, Ibarapa North Local Government Area while responding to the attack from the youths of the area.

Some reports alleged that trouble started when Amotekun Corps operatives went to a carnival ground in the area to tell the youths to end the carnival.

The reports added that in the process of trying to stop the carnival, there was an argument between the youths and the Amotekun, which made the youths to start stoning the officers. Eventually, the Amotekun operatives started shooting directly at them, killing three people in the process and leaving many injured.

However, Olayinka said the operatives were on their way to answer a distress call about an abduction when they stumbled upon some youths holding a carnival on the road. The road was barricaded, thereby blocking movement.

“On Tuesday night, boys in the community were holding a carnival on the major road leading to Igangan from Tapa. At about 8.30 pm, the Amotekun operatives were responding to a distress call of an attempted kidnap of a woman along Igangan axis. On getting to the barricaded road, an argument ensued when the community boys asked operatives to use the alternative route,” Olayinka told Oyo Affairs.

The Commandant added that the operatives challenged them, asking them why they were disobeying the no-carnival rule and that they needed to pass through the road which was barricaded.

He noted that the residents responded that the government had issued a directive that carnivals could hold till 10pm, so they were within their rights. The Commandant noted that while trying to get the youths to allow the officers to pass through, a fight ensued.

Colonel Olayinka said, “During the argument, hoodlums who were at the carnival opened fire at the Amotekun officers, spraying bullets at their truck and a gun battle ensued. The Amotekun operatives responded and, in the process, two residents at the carnival were caught in the crossfire, one of the Tapa boys and another boy from Aiyete who was on bike, while some Amotekun officers were gravely injured.”

It took the intervention of members of Operation Burst to deescalate the situation and return things to normalcy at about 11 pm.

However, as Col Olayinka revealed, the community boys went on a rampage this morning (Thursday) destroying houses and properties belonging to Amotekun operatives from Tapa and that of their families.

“One of the operative’s house was vandalized and burnt, his car and wife’s shop was also burnt. The Office of the Corp in the area was also vandalized.”

However, Operation Burst again came to the rescue and was able to save some vehicles in the office from being burnt by the hoodlums. The vehicles are currently with Operation Burst.

Meanwhile, according to the Amotekun top man, the corps has visited the two bereaved families and paid homage to the Kabiyesi. Corps operations 1 of the area have also been suspended for 2 weeks to calm frayed nerves.

Testifying to the importance of the work the corps is doing in Oyo State, Col Olayinka said, “it would be noted that the DSS and Operation Burst in that area praised the Amotekun corps for their usefulness adding that this was just an unfortunate incident which would be a dent on the pristine record of Amotekun in the area.”

  • Budgetary Provision for Education in 2021 Worst In Last Ten Years, NANS

Budgetary Provision for Education in 2021 Worst In Last Ten Years, NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS), has berated Buhari-led administration over the budgetary provision for education in 2021, describing it as the worst in the last ten years in the country.

NANS President, Comrade Sunday Asefon said this in Ado-Ekiti, on Thursday, during a courtesy visit to the office of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Correspondents’ Chapel, Ekiti chapter.

Disturbed by the neglect of the education sector, which was apportioned with a paltry of 5.6 percent in the 2021 budget and the high level of insecurity in the country, NANS has planned to organise a Security and Education Summit to partner stakeholders on how to arrest the drift in the two critical sectors

He said: “I condemn totally, the federal government’s 2021 budgetary provision to education. It was the worst in the last 10 years. The FG only apportioned 5.6 percent to the sector out of a total of N13.6 trillion budgetary provision.

“When you remove the percentage for basic education, what then becomes of the tertiary cadre? The percentage was ridiculous, low and disappointing . This is one of the challenges we are facing in the education sector”.

Asefon assured that the NANS under him would invest quality time to advocate for better funding of education sector, saying the sector has been neglected because only the children of the poor attend public universities.

On the spate of insecurity in the land, Asefon described as shocking, the kidnap of over 300 boarding students of the government College, Kankara, Katsina State by gunmen, saying this had attested to the utter failure of governance in the country.

“I was shocked by this incident and I urge the federal government to do something urgent about this. When I was told that the Kankara students were kidnapped with motorbikes, I was not really happy. It shows we don’t have security around our campuses. Our students were being bullied and harassed by bandits across the North, that we won’t tolerate.

“Nigeria is richly blessed. If you look at our budget, several billions of naira were being budgeted to security sector. In spite of this, we are not secured. With the way things are today, Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gunpowder.

“I think we can borrow a leaf from Singapore. Singapore had a lot of challenges like ours in the past, but it overcame with proper planning. Nigeria should take a leaf from this country.

“We are worried that our Education and Security have deteriorated due to government lapses. They have collapsed and Nigeria needs urgent overhauling.

“NANS under my headship will organise education and security summit, where we can address the deficiencies in the these two sectors.”

Asefon said his leadership of NANS will tackle the malaise of sex for marks, unlawful rustication and other forms of injustices on campuses.

He also warned the government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), not to renege on the pact leading to suspension of over nine months industrial action in the universities.

“The government and ASUU must honour their own side of the agreement . We are particularly worried that ASUU, whose members are supposed to be socialists are turning capitalists. They no longer put their children in the public schools and also not dedicated to duty.

“ASUU should not consider another strike. A lot of students had died, some had taken into ICT fraud and won’t come back to schools. Was the government and ASUU not aware that 75 percent of those that participated in EndSARS protests were students? They constituted about 41 million population of Nigeria.”

The NANS President called for total overhauling of the education and security sectors to be able to deliver for Nigerians.

Asefon stated that the election that brought him into office was keenly contested, which he said further put a burden on him to be focused in his service to the students, by executing transformational agenda that would reform and rebrand NANS.

  • Facebook Slams “Indefinite ban” Against Donald Trump

Facebook banned President Donald Trump from the platform “indefinitely” due to the US leader’s efforts to incite the violence in the US capital this week, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday.

Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page that the ban, which was announced Wednesday for 24 hours, was extended because of Trump’s “use of our platform to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government.”

He wrote: “The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden.

“His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world. We removed these statements yesterday because we judged that their effect — and likely their intent — would be to provoke further violence.

“Following the certification of the election results by Congress, the priority for the whole country must now be to ensure that the remaining 13 days and the days after inauguration pass peacefully and in accordance with established democratic norms.

“Over the last several years, we have allowed President Trump to use our platform consistent with our own rules, at times removing content or labeling his posts when they violate our policies. We did this because we believe that the public has a right to the broadest possible access to political speech, even controversial speech. But the current context is now fundamentally different, involving use of our platform to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government.

“We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great. Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”

  • NIN: Applicants Locked Out, as NIMC Staff Begin Strike

Thousands of applicants have been locked outside of the offices of the National Identity Management Commission following a strike embarked on by NIMC staff, according to The PUNCH.

The NIMC workers said it was necessary for them to embark on strike due to the exposure of staff to COVID-19 risks, lack of personal protective equipment, irregularities in promotion and poor funding.

The notice of strike was signed by the President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, NIMC branch, Lucky Michael, and its Secretary, Odia Victor.

It read in part, “Consequent upon the just concluded congress of the above-mentioned association that took place on January 6, 2020, the unit executive directs all members of grade level 12 and below in the head office and state offices to report to their respective duty posts tomorrow January 7, 2020 and do nothing.

“All members at the local government offices and special centres are advised to stay away from their various centres as task force and implementation committees would be on parade to ensure total compliance to the directive.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission had last month asked all telecoms firms to disconnect the SIM cards of all persons who have not integrated their National Identity Numbers with their phone lines by the end of January.

Currently, over 100 million Nigerians have yet to do so which has caused huge crowds to gather at the various offices of NIMC in breach of the COVID-19 protocol.

According to a communiqué issued at the end of the congress meeting of the ACCSN, NIMC branch, the strike had become necessary due to the exposure of staff to COVID-19 risks, lack of personal protective equipment, irregularities in promotion and poor funding.

They also asked to be paid overtime and given enough tools to work with.

The congress noted that, “Staff members were infected with COVID-19 and adequate measures have not been taken to curtail the spread. The meeting resolved that safety of staff should be prioritised. Furthermore, the office environment should be fumigated immediately.

“The congress agreed that the NIMC staff salary structure approved by the Federal Government vide Presidential assent be implemented in the personnel appropriation of the 2021 annual budget effective January 2021.

“That the lopsided and irregular promotion done in 2017 and 2020 be reviewed, regularised and gazetted in accordance with public service rules.”

  • Former President Goodluck Jonathan Reacts To Insurrection By Trump Supporters

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reacted to the insurrection initiated by Pro-Trump supporters at the United States Capitol yesterday January 6.

Jonathan in a statement he released, said it is better to lose power at the cost of gaining peace, than to gain power at the price of losing the peace.

    He further said it is never too late to reject the venom and inject the serum of peace. The statement read;

“I have repeatedly said nobody’s political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen, in any part of the world. Absolutely nobody.

“Again, I reiterate that it is better to lose power at the cost of gaining peace, than to gain power at the price of losing the peace.

“As a leader, one must not just look unto one’s own interest, but the interest and the good of society.

“It is never too late to reject the venom and inject the serum of peace. It is necessary to state that the highest purpose of leadership is to bring people together, even those that do not share in your philosophy.

“And you do not need an office to do that. All you need to achieve that height of leadership is conscience. Let us be men of conscience at this hour.”

  • 4 Die, 52 Trump’s Supporters Arrested After Besieging Capitol Building

Four people died and 52 were arrested after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory, Washington D.C.’s Police Chief said.

In a late-night news conference, Metropolitan Police Department, Chief Robert J. Contee, said 47 of the 52 arrests to date were related to violations of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s 6.00 p.m. curfew.

Twenty-six of those arrests were made on the U.S. Capitol grounds.

Several others were arrested on charges related to carrying unlicensed or prohibited firearms.

In addition, Contee said, two pipe bombs were recovered from the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national committees, as well as a cooler from a vehicle on U.S. Capitol grounds that contained Molotov cocktails.

Contee declined to identify the woman a Capitol Police officer shot and killed, saying next of kin notification was still pending.

Three other people also died on Wednesday because of medical emergencies, he added, and 14 police officers were injured – two of whom remain hospitalised.

It was not clear if other federal or local police agencies, including the Capitol Police, had made additional arrests.

While the number of people arrested is expected to grow, the initial number pales in comparison to the more than 300 people who were arrested by the Police, following the June 1 protests in the district related to the police killing of George Floyd.

In that incident, baton-swinging police and federal agents fired smoke canisters, flashbang grenades and rubber bullets to drive protesters farther from the White House, enabling President Donald Trump to walk across Lafayette Park and hold up a Bible in front of St. John’s Church.

While police faced staunch criticism for being too aggressive at Lafayette Square, however, the Capitol Police are now facing questions about why they did not do more to secure the Capitol and let many of the rioters, later exit the building without arrests.

Bowser, the mayor, said the Police intended to ask the public for help in identifying rioters, many of whom posed for photos inside the Capitol and can be seen in viral videos on social media without face masks.

“We will be on the lookout,’’ she said.

“Some of them, we think … have to be held accountable for the carnage.’’

Late on Wednesday, the FBI also asked the public to submit tips, such as images, videos and other information to help agents identify people who were “actively instigating violence’’.

Bowser also extended a public emergency declaration for 15 days, an action she said will allow her to restrict peoples’ movements around the city if necessary.

  • Just In: Trump Finally Speaks on Transition of Power To President-elect

Just In: Trump Finally Speaks on Transition of Power To President-elect

President Trump acknowledged the end of his first term as president early Thursday morning saying there would be an “orderly transition of power” on Jan. 20 minutes after Congress formally certified the Electoral College votes in favor of President-elect Joe Biden.

Trump’s statement was shared through the Twitter account of senior aide Dan Scavino. Facebook and Twitter temporarily suspended Trump out of his account after he posted about a pro-Trump mob that overran the Capitol on Wednesday.

“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th. I have always said we would continue our… fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”

The message came just before 4 a.m. on Thursday, minutes after lawmakers formally tabulated the Electoral College votes. The certification dragged into the early morning after the process was interrupted just an hour into debate on Wednesday when Trump supporters breached the Capitol.

Earlier in the day, Trump told the crowd of supporters he would “never concede” and had put pressure on Republicans to challenge the election certification.

But the president has faced pressure to both concede and commit to a peaceful transfer of power, including from members of his own party.

On Wednesday, following the violent scenes at the Capitol Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) called on Trump to concede, saying he should “quit misleading” the American people.

“It’s past time for the president to accept the results of the election, quit misleading the American people, and repudiate mob violence,” Cotton said in a statement Wednesday evening, before the election was certified by Congress.

Trump’s multiple attacks on the integrity of the election, which officials have repeatedly denied and which have been rejected in court, were linked on Wednesday to the chaos at the Capitol.
