Graphic Video: Soldiers Killed 5 Drivers, Injured Many Over ‘N200 Bribe’ in Kwara

Five commercial drivers have been shot dead by soldiers at Ilesha-Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara in a dispute over N200 bribe.

Quoting sources in the area, the News Agency of Nigeria reports that the incident was triggered off by a driver who refused to pay the usual N200 “booking” bribe to soldiers at a checkpoint they mounted Ilesha-Baruba/Chikanda highway.

The driver reportedly told the soldiers that he had already ‘booked’ earlier in the morning.

But the claim was said to have infuriated the soldiers who subsequently slapped and ordered the friver to do frog jumps.

According to the sources, the vehicle was also seized.

The driver later left the spot and lodged a complaint with officials of the transport union in the area.

NAN learnt that members of the union subsequently followed the driver with the aim of talking to the soldiers on his behalf.

This however allegedly degenerated into unpleasant arguments, leading to the alleged shooting of some drivers with three allegedly dying on the spot and two dying later from gunshot wounds.

One of the sources said that the corpses of the deceased were taken to a morgue in Saki, Oyo state.

He added that some victims with serious wounds were presently receiving medical care at a hospital in Saki while some were taken to native doctors in Kenu village for removal of bullets from their bodies.

When contacted for reaction on the shooting incident, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, the Public Relations Officer of the Police Command in Kwara confirmed the clash between the soldiers and drivers.

Okasanmi, however, said that the command was yet to ascertain the number of casualties, both dead and injured adding that investigation would be carried out to ascertain the true situation.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale investigation into the crisis and we will communicate our findings very soon,” he said.

The police spokesman stated that normalcy had been restored to the area with the deployment of men of the state command.

A Twitter user, @ibrahimburour shared a short video of one of the victims who sustained gun shot Injuries and claimed that the victim in the video below is his nephew.

  • Reason Behind Dismissal Of Alleged Certificate Forgery Suit Against Obaseki Revealed

The reason behind the dismissal of alleged certificate forgery suit filed against the governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, at the federal high Court sitting in Abuja has been revealed.

The suit was instituted against the governor by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a chieftain of the party, Williams Edobor, following the Edo State governorship election.

Delivering the judgement in the suit on Saturday, Justice Ahmed Mohammed said the plaintiffs relied on the photocopied document presented by Governor Obaseki without getting in touch with the university to verify the authenticity of the said certificate.

He stated that no iota of truth was brought before the court by the plaintiffs who alleged forgery, saying it was a criminal matter, but the claimants were unable to prove their case.

The judge held that the Deputy Registrar (Legal) of the University of Ibadan had given evidence in the suit that the university duly issued the certificate to Governor Obaseki.

He noted that the governor was duly and properly admitted to study Classics which was later renamed Classical Studies in 1976 and graduated in 1979.

According to Justice Mohammed, the plaintiffs failed to prove their allegations of forgery against Governor Obaseki, and, thereby, the case is dismissed.

But the judge did not award any cost against the plaintiffs.

Counsels to both parties in the suit had closed their cases after presenting witnesses and evidence to the court.

Lawyer to the plaintiffs, Akin Olujimi, had on Thursday adopted his final written address, asking the court to affirm their position that the governor presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and was unfit to occupy the office.

But his submission was rejected by Governor Obaseki’s counsel, Ken Mozia, who urged the court to dismiss the suit over what he described as the plaintiff’s failure to prove their case.

Governor Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the APC in the September 19, 2020 poll to secure another term in office.

Court Dismisses Certificate Forgery Suit Against Obaseki

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed the alleged certificate forgery suit filed against the governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed delivered the judgment on Saturday in a suit filed by the All Progressives Party (APC) and a chieftain of the party, Williams Edobor, against the governor.

The APC and Edobor had filed the suit alleging that Governor Obaseki presented a forged certificate to seek re-election in the Edo State governorship election held on September 19, 2020.

According to the plaintiffs, the said document was purportedly issued by the University of Ibadan, while the governor presented same to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which conducted the poll.

Before Justice Mohammed delivered the judgement in the suit, counsels to both parties in the matter had closed their cases after they presented witnesses and evidence to the court.

During proceedings on Thursday, lawyer to the Plaintiffs, Akin Olujimi, adopted his final written address.

He urged the court to affirm their position that the governor presented a forged certificate to the electoral umpire and was unfit to occupy the office.

This was, however, rejected by Governor Obaseki’s counsel, Ken Mozia, who asked the court to dismiss the suit over what he described as the plaintiff’s failure to prove their case.

A Dramatic Switch, Yet Same Result
Governor Obaseki contested and won the governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a bid to extend his stay in office by another four years.

Although he was elected into office for the first term on the APC platform, the governor later defected from the party after he was screened out from the party’s primary which saw Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu emerging as the APC flagbearer for the election.

This came in the middle of a lingered dispute between the governor and his predecessor and immediate past APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

After defecting from the APC, he got the PDP’s ticket and went ahead to defeat Ize-Iyamu for the second time to claim the governorship seat in what can be described as a dramatic switch of political parties.

Governor Obaseki had defeated Ize-Iyamu as the APC candidate in the 2016 governorship election while the latter was the PDP candidate.

Four years later, he secured 307,955 of the total votes, 84,336 more votes than Ize-Iyamu who got 223, 619 votes.

  • Four Years After, OAU Management Reopens Halls of Residence Mosque

Four Years After, OAU Management Reopens Halls of Residence Mosque

Barely four years after the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on the order of top members of the Muslim community shut down halls of residence mosque, the management in a letter dated 24th of December approved its reopening.

The approval to reopening the worship centers was contained in a circular signed by the acting director in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, I.O Adejuwon, the move was realised after the matter was presented to the School Council.

Recall that, the mosques were forcefully shut down in 2017 following ideological clash, flagrant disobedience to the constituted authorities among others between members of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), OAU branch, and some top members of the Muslim community.

This development might not be unconnected with the concerted efforts of some highly placed stakeholders within and outside the university community particularly the chief Imam, Prof. Abubakar Abefe Sanusi, The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof Isiaka Olamilekan Aransi, other members of University of Ife Muslim Graduates Association, UNIFEMGA, among others.

Prof. Sanusi through a letter dated 19th December, 2020 has urged the school management to reopen the mosques within the halls of residence while assuring that peace and sanity would be restored.

However, the School management via its Council has given three terms and conditions which must be religiously followed, these include:

    1. The mosques should be designed such that the inner portion would be visible to those outside.
    2. Activities in the mosques should be conducted in ways that will be visible to everyone and not in any way shrouded in secrecy; and
    3. The activities of the students should be supervised by the office of the Chief Imam, and biannual reports to the office of the Vice-Chancellor would be appreciated.

Before the mosques were shut down by the management on 3rd of June, 2017, Muslims students and some non-Muslim students did attend series of tutorials organized by executive members of Muslim Students, Islamic Programs among other eye-opening and life-changing events.

  • Strike: Buhari-led Administration Is A Government Of Lies, Empty Promises, NANS

Strike: Buhari-led Administration Is A Government Of Lies, Empty Promises, NANS

Following the accusation raised by some members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, that the federal government has not fulfilled the promise made to the union last month which led to the suspension of the nine-month-old strike, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, South West Zone, has described the Buhari-led administration as government of lies and empty promises.

The students’ body in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Kazeem Olalekan Israel on Friday, which was made available to Vreporters said, it find it embarrassing to be duly informed about the refusal of government to implement the agreement reached in the course of their last meeting.

NANS added that, as an association, its owes a historical responsibility, a sacred duty and a religious obligation to hold government at all level to account.

    The statement reads in part; “it must be stated emphatically that we find it most embarrassing to be informed that the Federal Government has failed to meet the conditions of the agreement that was entered with ASUU before suspension of the strike action that was embarked upon by the association which states that;

“* The Federal Government shall pay #30bn as part of one tranche of #220bn on or before 31st January, 2021, as a sign of commitment to the MoU of 2013.

“* The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) shall release #40bn on or before 31st of December, 2020, to offset part of the outstanding claims of members of all registered Trade Unions in the Universities after each staff had provided necessary evidence of having earned the allowances. The NUC is to provide the necessary account details before this date.

“However, the Federal Government in their characteristic manner has failed to fulfil their terms of the agreement that was willingly entered with ASUU. But, as an association, we are not surprised neither are we shocked by the failure of the Federal Government to do the needful as expected of them because this is a government that has failed to fulfil the terms of the social contract it willingly entered into with the people since 2015.

“We feel embittered that the government is not ready to show any commitment to rescue the Nigerian educational sector from the torpedo it has found itself as a result of successive governmental failure. The tragedy of Nigeria’s dysfunctional educational system was witnessed few years back when a report indicated that right in Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s hometown in Ikenne, the only Obafemi that pupils know is Obafemi Martins. That is to tell you how low we have gone.

“It would have been expected of a serious-minded government to pay serious and critical attention to the educational sector in reviving it, but, rather than do that, our government is more concerned about $ to embezzle and mismanage to the extent that nothing tangible was done to increase this year’s budget for the educational sector which we have been lamenting on since last year when it was unveiled.

“We find it insulting that government set up new Universities but downplays the welfare of teachers resulting in a shutdown of Universities for 9 solid months with no end in sight. We have found ourselves in a situation whereby the already-existing institutions in the country are not been funded, but, the government derive joy in establishing new ones. This reveals a superficial, hasty and ill-thought-out approach to governance.

“It is most pathetic that at the time of the departure of the British colonial masters, Nigeria was considered to be one of the emerging great nations of the world. Unfortunately, today, the country has slid deep into underdevelopment to the extent that no Nigerian University can compete globally and there is no end in sight. Indeed, the journey to democracy and nationhood has been tortous and the country is in dire straits.

“It is sad that the Buhari government apart from doing business as usual, is also suffocating us with same spent forces that have had their time in leadership but made a mess of it. We believe that Buhari will ultimately be remembered as a man who had the opportunity to write his name in gold, but choose rather for selfish interest to write it on marble of infamy.”

The association concluded that, it says NO to a clandestine return to military dictatorship complicated with irredeemable corrupt system and terrorism and State-terror against dissent. It maintains that, if tyranny is law, then, revolution is order.

Finally, the body emphasized that, it align its thoughts with any action embarked upon by ASUU and all Staff Unions on campuses.

Recall that, the Minister of Labour and Employment had in phone chat with This Day Newspaper two days ago denied the allegation raised by ASUU, stating that, ” There is no breach of the agreement. The Federal Government has paid N40 billion Earned Academic Allowance to the National Universities Commission, NUC, has aggred”.

  • Minister Speaks NIN Registration, Crowd At NIMC Offices

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, has said that it takes five minutes for each Nigerian to complete the National Identification Number registration at any of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) offices nationwide.

He disclosed this on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“Each person takes around three to five minutes to complete the registration and go as long as you have completed your form,” he said.

“You can complete the form virtually without visiting any office but there are things that require you (to be there) physically like your biometrics; you cannot submit your biometrics without you (being there) physically.”

Reacting to the crowds that throng NIMC offices nationwide, the Minister said 95 percent of applicants appear at the agency’s offices without being invited.

He said despite the government’s directives for Nigerians to observe the COVID-19 protocols while registering, Pantami lamented that the applicant shuns directives.

“Citizens will go there, their names are not part of those to be captured but they will go and stay at the gates, and if you ask them to leave they will not. Even the security agencies plead with them but they will not go.

“All the crowds you have been seeing in Abuja or Lagos, 90 percent or even 95 percent of them were not part of those invited to be captured. They only go there and stay outside the gates.”

On the industrial action embarked upon by the NIMC staff, Pantami said the workers did not, inform the ministry of their demands and grievances before embarking on strike.

  • Amotekun: NANS Issues 72-hour Ultimatum To Governor Makinde

Amotekun: NANS Issues 72-hour Ultimatum To Governor Makinde

As reactions continue to trail the operations of the Western States Security Network, codenamed: Amotekun, the leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), has issued 72-hour ultimatum to the Oyo State Government to beam its search light into the activities of of some officers of the security outfit.

The ultimatum was on the heels of series of alleged misdeeds of some operatives of the corps since its inauguration by Governor Seyi Makinde in the state.

The students’ body, in a statement jointly signed by the association’s chairman in the state, Comrade Oluwafunmbi Mayowa Opakunle; General Secretary, Comrade Ojetola Babatunde; Public Relations Officer, Comrade Adeleke which stated that the Amotekun corps had over the time shown that they needed additional orientation on modern security approaches and their relationship with the masses, for proper cohabitation and navigation of their duties as they will be needing necessary stakeholders in fishing out the criminal elements amidst the population.

The statement added that this was the best way to overcome the security threats posed by bandits and other criminal elements and to avoid unnecessary victimization of the people.

The statement read further: “We’ve written on several occasions to inform the Oyo State Government and the entire populace of the state on the excesses of the just commissioned Western States Security Network, Amotekun Corps, but it seems a mere propaganda to many and an attempt aimed at undermining the effort of the state government on tackling the rampant insecurity uprising in the state, as the accused has also sent publications on this occasions to distort the allegations against them.

“But truth and reality cannot be hidden for long, as a burning vapour cannot be covered; the Amotekun corps had over and over again shown that they need additional orientation on modern security approaches and their relationship with the masses, for proper cohabitation and navigation of their duties as they will be needing necessary stakeholders in fishing out the criminal elements amidst the population.”

“As this is the best way to overcome the security threats posed by bandits and other criminal elements and to avoid unnecessary victimization of the people.

“These set of people have shown to be lacking in moral ethics of modern security operations and necessary training ensuring it, and has been operating in total contrary to the mode and purpose of their enactment made known to the public because it can not be understood in any way as to the reason for their recurrent misdemeanours and assaults to the innocent citizens. We should recollect that these acts are a replica of the causes of the aggravated #EndSars protests that shook the whole country.

“We urged the Oyo State Government earlier as the state government that houses this axis of the National Association of Nigerian Students, to see to the perpetrators of these reported crimes else the supposed security of the state will only be a charade of the intended, but all have been futile and no positive response whatsoever, rather, it has aggravated and just again the Amotekun Corps have victimized the Public Relations Officer of the NANS Oyo State JCC, with so many other cases of innocent students being victimized across all areas of the state.

“We all will agree that the Western States Security Network, Amotekun is new and still a baby compared to other security agencies in the country. It is a necessity for all and sundry to be a part of their success if we all want to sleep with our two eyes closed.”

“We urge the Oyo State Government to invest more time and concentrate more on the successful running and administration of Amotekun Corps to achieve the desired result.

“Despite our regards and willingness to always cooperate with the state government so as to make things work in our beloved Oyo State and to defeat the number one enemy of the state(insecurity), we have rather been met with rejection, seen as irrelevant, unworthy, inapplicable and impertinent, but we can’t continue to fold arms and act like nothing is happening while innocent students are being victimized.

“We are always ready to play our part and reprimand where necessary, we, therefore, put it straight to the state government and demand that the Amotekun Corps are properly reorientated, retrained and exposed to moral ethics of modern security operations, before being reintegrated into the society, to avoid more casualties being recorded to their name as this may lead to a great response from us as an association to protect our own.

We are giving the Oyo State Government a 72-hour ultimatum from Monday to attend to these issues or await a more active response from the association; which implies that there will be confrontations in our own ways by Thursday, January 14, 2021, if the state government remains indifferent as posed to us,” the statement warned.

  • Amotekun Commandant Confirms Death of Three Young Men Killed By Operatives in Oyo

Amotekun Commandant Confirms Death of Three Young Men Killed By Operatives in Oyo

The Commandant of the Oyo State Western Nigeria Security Network, Colonel Olayanju Olayinka said Amotekun Corps operatives killed two young men in Tapa, Ibarapa North Local Government Area while responding to the attack from the youths of the area.

Some reports alleged that trouble started when Amotekun Corps operatives went to a carnival ground in the area to tell the youths to end the carnival.

The reports added that in the process of trying to stop the carnival, there was an argument between the youths and the Amotekun, which made the youths to start stoning the officers. Eventually, the Amotekun operatives started shooting directly at them, killing three people in the process and leaving many injured.

However, Olayinka said the operatives were on their way to answer a distress call about an abduction when they stumbled upon some youths holding a carnival on the road. The road was barricaded, thereby blocking movement.

“On Tuesday night, boys in the community were holding a carnival on the major road leading to Igangan from Tapa. At about 8.30 pm, the Amotekun operatives were responding to a distress call of an attempted kidnap of a woman along Igangan axis. On getting to the barricaded road, an argument ensued when the community boys asked operatives to use the alternative route,” Olayinka told Oyo Affairs.

The Commandant added that the operatives challenged them, asking them why they were disobeying the no-carnival rule and that they needed to pass through the road which was barricaded.

He noted that the residents responded that the government had issued a directive that carnivals could hold till 10pm, so they were within their rights. The Commandant noted that while trying to get the youths to allow the officers to pass through, a fight ensued.

Colonel Olayinka said, “During the argument, hoodlums who were at the carnival opened fire at the Amotekun officers, spraying bullets at their truck and a gun battle ensued. The Amotekun operatives responded and, in the process, two residents at the carnival were caught in the crossfire, one of the Tapa boys and another boy from Aiyete who was on bike, while some Amotekun officers were gravely injured.”

It took the intervention of members of Operation Burst to deescalate the situation and return things to normalcy at about 11 pm.

However, as Col Olayinka revealed, the community boys went on a rampage this morning (Thursday) destroying houses and properties belonging to Amotekun operatives from Tapa and that of their families.

“One of the operative’s house was vandalized and burnt, his car and wife’s shop was also burnt. The Office of the Corp in the area was also vandalized.”

However, Operation Burst again came to the rescue and was able to save some vehicles in the office from being burnt by the hoodlums. The vehicles are currently with Operation Burst.

Meanwhile, according to the Amotekun top man, the corps has visited the two bereaved families and paid homage to the Kabiyesi. Corps operations 1 of the area have also been suspended for 2 weeks to calm frayed nerves.

Testifying to the importance of the work the corps is doing in Oyo State, Col Olayinka said, “it would be noted that the DSS and Operation Burst in that area praised the Amotekun corps for their usefulness adding that this was just an unfortunate incident which would be a dent on the pristine record of Amotekun in the area.”
