  • Resumption of Varsity Students “Suffer Set Back”, As NASU, SSANU Begin Warning Strike

Resumption of public Varsity Students might suffer set back if federal government fails to address the demands of Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), as the unions have concluded their plans to embark on 3-day warning strike over government’s refusal to address their demands about Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), sharing formula of the N40 billion Earned Academic allowances, non-payment of arrears of the new minimum wage, among others.

They took the decision to protest against inconsistencies in IPPIS payment, the delay in the renegotiation of the FGN/ ASUU /SSANU 2009 Agreement and other issues on Friday night at a meeting that held between the leadership of NASU and SSANU in Abuja.

  • FG Lists Conditions For States To Access COVID-19 Vaccine

FG Lists Conditions For States To Access COVID-19 Vaccine

The Federal Government has listed conditions for states to meet before the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine being expected wt the end of January would be released to them.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), during a webinar tagged “Sensitisation Meeting with Media Gatekeepers on COVID-19 Vaccine Introduction”, at the weekend, said no vaccine will be release to states until facilities such as cold chains are in place.

According to Director, Logistics and Health Commodities, NHPCDA, Kubura Daradara, the vaccine must be administered within five days of receipt for it to remain potent, and only the states that show commitment would receive the doses when available.

She added that the 100,000 doses would be administered to 50,000 people, because each person has to take a second dose 21 days after taking the first.

The NPHCDA also released the details of how the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine doses will be distributed across states.

According to the programme manager, national emergency routine immunisation coordination centre, NPHCDA, Bassey Okposen, the country will receive 100,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine at the end of January.

Okposen, who stood in for, executive director of the NPHCDA, Faisal Shuaib, during his presentation at the webinar, said the vaccines would be administered around the last week of January or early February.

He explained further that, states with higher percentage of confirmed cases would be given additional doses.

He also noted that frontline health workers would be prioritised, while other batches would be administered to the elderly and vulnerable persons with co-morbidities based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.

“We have other sources of vaccine that are non-mRNA like the COVAX vaccine. The country and other stakeholders are working towards how they can get additional vaccines from the other countries like Russia and USA,” Okposen said.

“We want to assure all Nigerians that the vaccine is safe and effective. The vaccine will be introduced in four phases and this is due to the availability and quantity of the vaccine that will come in at any given time.

“When the vaccine arrives, in the plan, there’s going to be the prioritisation of persons to be given the vaccination so as to optimise the available resources and vaccines that will be received and this will be based on global best practices.

“In the first priority, when the limited doses first come in towards the end of this month and early February, will be the frontline health workers like immigration, airport, police and military on essential duties, those working in the labs and other medical practitioners.

“Those states with higher number of cases will be given additional doses. We’ve mapped out the health workers in each state and locations where these vaccines will be deployed as soon as we receive them. All the states in the country have cases and we need to get the vaccine to them all if we want to achieve herd immunity.”

In a data shared by NPHCDA, Kano, Lagos, Katsina, Kaduna, Bauchi and Oyo will receive higher doses for health workers.

    The breakdown is as follows: Kano, 3,557; Lagos, 3,131; Katsina, 2,361; Kaduna, 2,074; Bauchi, 1,900; Oyo, 1,848; Rivers, 1,766; Jigawa, 1,712; Niger, 1,558; Ogun, 1,473; Sokoto, 1,468; Benue, 1,423; Borno, 1,416; Anambra, 1,379; Kebbi, 1,361; Zamfara, 1,336; Rivers, 1,306; Imo, 1,267; Ondo, 1,228; Akwa Ibom, 1,161.

  • Nigerian Pastor Dies of COVID-19

Popular Nigerian Pastor with the House on the Rock, Adeyinka Akinbami, has died of deadly COVID-19 aged 61.

His death was confirmed by a Senior Pastor, Paul Adefarasin, who said he had yet to come to terms with Akinbami’s death.

He said the incident was a reminder of how deadly COVID-19 was and called on Nigerians to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols.

Adefarasin tweeted, “Yesterday, I received the rude and shocking news of someone deeply dear to me and all of the HOTR family. The passing of Pastor Yinka Akinbami has become most painful because if there truly were good men, he was certainly one. To my brother, sleep well till we meet to part no more.

“Family, kindly allow me to solicit your intercession for his dear wife of over 30 years; Pastor Tolu, his children, his children-in-law, and grandchildren. We can only at best, imagine how much pain they are feeling. We share the pain of his loss, but they will feel it a lot more.

“It’s important to remind the community about the deadly nature of the Covid-19 and its mutant virus strains. Please do your part by following all the recommended precautions. That way, you can protect yourself and others who become proximal to you. God bless and keep us all.”

He said when he was preparing to get married about 12 years ago, the deceased took charge of the counselling.

Osakioduwa wrote on Instagram, “I don’t post a lot when people pass. This case though is very different for me. This man right here, Pastor Yinka Akinbami, is what you call a good man. He and his lovely wife, Pastor Tolu, are one of the very few couples I’d call ‘goals’ in this marriage business.

“They counselled my wife and me before marriage, and I can say confidently that in the 12 years and counting of our marriage, we have kept striving to live up to the things they taught and showed us. Their love was so real. They didn’t fake it at all.

“He was always willing to answer all our questions, no matter how ‘Unchristian’ they were. He had our time.”

  • To Kwara Govt: Alleged Killing of 5 Drivers By Soldiers In Kwara And The Need For Justice

To Kwara Govt: Alleged Killing of 5 Drivers By Soldiers In Kwara And The Need For Justice

    Busy Brain Writes From Maiduguri

My heart bleeds profusely as I could not hold back the tears rolling down from my eyes when I read the news of five (5) drivers allegedly killed by Soldiers at Ilesa Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.

On what condition should innocent souls whose daily food revolve around their daily income be murdered cheaply, leaving their family and beloved ones into deep agony and somberness.

News Agency of Nigeria reported earlier that five commercial drivers were shot dead by soldiers in a dispute over N200 bribe.

NAN, quoting sources in the area said the incident was triggered off by a driver who refused to pay the usual N200 “booking” bribe to soldiers at a checkpoint they mounted Ilesha-Baruba/Chikanda highway.

The driver reportedly told the soldiers that he had already ‘booked’ earlier in the morning.

But the claim was said to have infuriated the soldiers who subsequently slapped and ordered the driver to do frog jumps.

According to the sources, the vehicle was also seized.

The driver later left the spot and lodged a complaint with officials of the transport union in the area.

NAN learnt that members of the union subsequently followed the driver with the aim of talking to the soldiers on his behalf.

This however allegedly degenerated into unpleasant arguments, leading to the alleged shooting of some drivers with three allegedly dying on the spot and two dying later from gunshot wounds.

The peak of brutality and wickedness displayed from the above reports have portrayed the Kwara State Government as one who care less about justice for the civilians. The gong to demand for justice should have started clanging since the day of that gory incident by Kwara State Government. This actually reminds me of Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum. The man that would never watch his people killed extra judicially. Had the incident happened in Borno, Prof. Zulum would have dragged the killer soldiers and called them out for justice to reign. It is a message to the Kwara State Govt to act beyond condolence messages to the deceased families and the paramount ruler of Ilesha Baruba Kingdom and press for justice.

Although, many things have actually gone wrong in Nigeria and the personnel charged with the sole responsibility of protecting lives have been killing innocent like fowls without concrete justice for the victims.

Like many other extra judicial killings that had happened in the past, here is another version in Kwara State and the justices in our court have journey traveled to exile in Nigeria. As I pray for the soul of the deceased to rest in peace, I equally pray for our justices to come back and rescue us. Justice must be served.

Don’t only read it, share it as well for Justice
