Commandant of the agency, Col. Olayanju Olayinka (rtd.) said investigation showed that Afolabi shot the victim against Amotekun’s protocol.

    The statement reads in part;

“At about 10pm on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, operatives of Amotekun, led by Team Leader George Idowu, got an alert of a purported armed robbery operation at Total Filling Station, Mokola, Ibadan.

“Following the distress call, the Team Leader and his team of seven members, arrived the scene.

“On arrival at the scene of the alleged crime, it turned out that it was not an armed robbery operation, though a crowd had gathered.

“The Team Leader, sensing no immediate danger to anyone at the scene, immediately proceeded to speak with the station manager. While he was with the manager, he heard a gunshot.

“As it turned out, one of his team members, by the name Afolabi Kazeem, who felt sufficiently threatened by the crowd, which included some hoodlums armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, opened fire to supposedly scare away the crowd. Unfortunately, his shot hit one Mr Tosin Thomas, 23, who was subsequently confirmed dead.

“The Corps has found that Afolabi Kazeem with Ammunition Number AM031849 acted outside the Amotekun Corps’ protocols.

“For this reason, he has been summarily dismissed from the Corps and handed over to the police for prosecution. Also, his Team leader, George Idowu, is being thoroughly investigated and will face all necessary sanctions.

“We want to reassure members of the public of our internal mechanisms for dealing with erring officers. We will continue to train and retrain our officers on best practices and rules of engagement.

“The Corps deeply regrets the loss to the Thomas family, and we are already in touch with the family.”

  • Resumption: FUNAAB VC Warns ASUU Against ‘Personilsed Unionism’

The Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof Felix Kolawole Salako, has warned the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), FUNAAB chapter, against ‘perssoniised unionism’, which according to him is tantamount to demarketing the Varsity.

The Chairman of ASUU FUNAAB, Dr Adebayo Oni, had reportedly said the institution cannot resume academic activities now because there was no preparation on COVID-19 safety protocols.

Oni, in a report published by a national daily said “The lectures halls are overcrowded.

“As of today, in my own campus, I have not seen any facility for hand washing. Who is to provide sanitisers? Do you expect lecturers to provide sanitisers for themselves?”

But Salako, while addressing newsmen at the university in Abeokuta, Ogun State, described the comment as shocking and a disservice to the institution.

The VC said contrary to the ASUU narrative, the institution has made adequate preparations; both medical equipment and infrastructure, to ensure students receive lectures virtually and physically in compliance with the safety protocols.

He said apart from the provision of hand sanitisers made by the university and handwashing facility at every point, the management had fumigated the campus and hostels over 10 times since the outbreak of the virus in Nigeria.

  • House of Reps Impeached President Trump

The US House of Representatives has impeached President Donald Trump for “incitement of insurrection” at last week’s Capitol riot.

He is the first president in US history to be twice impeached – to be charged with crimes by Congress.

Mr Trump, a Republican, will now face a trial in the Senate, where if convicted he could face being barred from ever holding office again.

The impeachment measure passed largely along party lines.

Mr Trump is due to leave office on 20 January, following his election defeat last November to Democrat Joe Biden.

After several hours of impassioned debate on Wednesday, the Democratic-controlled House voted.

Six Republicans said beforehand they would side with Democrats to impeach the president. But the majority of conservatives remained loyal to Mr Trump.

But it is unlikely Mr Trump will have to leave the White House before his term in office ends in one week as the Senate was not expected to convene in time.

Last week, 139 Republicans voted against accepting the result of the 2020 election and Mr Trump’s defeat.
