The monetary award was seen in a now viral A4 paper which has the inscription of the University of Ilorin boldly written on it.

The institution is well known for ‘rewarding academic excellence’ from its inception, as this was confirmed by the incumbent JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede who is one of the illustrious alumni of the institution when he was quoted to have said that, he acquired a property from the money he got when he emerged as a scholar in his department.

A scholar who graduated from the department of History and international studies, Quadri Samson told this medium that, he got almost N100k and other perks for leading his class from his sophomore year till got to final year.

The university just concluded its combined convocations which has no fewer than 450 graduands who bagged first class honor, though this year ceremony was greeted with complaints from the graduating students accusing the Varsity of extortion, an allegation which the Varsity downrightly denied.

  • Naira Crashes at Parallel Market Against U.S. Dollar

The naira on Tuesday exchanged at N1,000 to the United States dollar at the parallel market, a historic dip that spotlights the weakness of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to manage the national currency amid runaway inflation.

While the central bank’s rate appeared to stabilise at N768 per dollar over the past week, the currency value has sunk to critical depths for those trying to access it at the parallel market, where most foreign exchange transactions are conducted in Nigeria.

According to Abokifx, a website that aggregates daily rates for Nigerians using parallel market sources, the dollar sold at N1,000 on Tuesday morning.

Abokifx gained prominence shortly after the naira began a steep freefall in 2016, following President Muhammadu Buhari’s brazen display of power over the central bank’s activities, which turned off international investors and reduced dollar inflow into Nigeria even as demand grew from within the country.

Ousted Governor Godwin Emefiele of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) attacked Abokifx in 2021 for allegedly manipulating the exchange rate at the parallel market.

Abokifx’s shutdown in September 2021 has so far done nothing to stop the naira’s free fall and steep crashing at the parallel market. But critics admonished Mr Emefiele at the time to focus on stabilising the naira rather than his 2023 presidential ambition, which appeared to have distracted him from functioning efficiently as Nigeria’s top banker.

The naira has continued to depreciate considerably against the dollar despite Mr Tinubu’s attempt to allow the free market to determine its value. It was exchanging at about N650 when Mr Tinubu took over from Mr Buhari on May 29.

Spokespersons for both the presidency and the central bank did not return Peoples Gazette’s requests seeking comments about the naira’s historic fall on Tuesday.

  • JAMB Bars Parents From Choosing Courses For Their Children

JAMB Bars Parents From Choosing Courses For Their Children

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a policy, barring parents from choosing preferred courses for their children, especially those living with disabilities, seeking admissions into tertiary institutions.

JAMB’s Registrar, Isqau Oloyede broke the information while reacting to the comment by the National President, the National Association of Visually Impaired Students, headed by Stanley Onyebuchi at the First Conference of JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) in Abuja Monday.

The Conference has as its theme: ”Towards Increasing Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria”.

The programme also featured the unveiling of the Strategic Roadmap for Inclusive Access to Quality Higher Education in Nigeria 2024-2028.

“There was a case of a student that wanted to study law, it was her stepfather that said he cannot allow her to go as far as Calabar to study law but asked that she be enrolled in Kaduna State University.

“This is because the course she showed interest in was not available at the university but the father asked that she study special education.

“We have now taken a decision that henceforth, just like with regular admissions, no parent will be allowed to have a say in the admission choice of candidates with disabilities,” he said.

In his opening address, Oloyede said that the board was ready not only to facilitate access but ensure equity as special arrangements had been made for inclusivity of PWDs to acquire tertiary education.

Meanwhile, the National President, National Association of Visually Impaired, Stanley Onyebuchi had said that some of their members faced some sorts of rejection from tertiary institutions in the areas of their choice courses.

Onyebuchi said when PWDs sought for admissions in tertiary institutions, some of the institutions castigated them saying they were not meant to be in their institution.

He added that the economic hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy had taken a toll on its members as many of them no longer continued their education.

“I want the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities to take note of our predicaments.

”If it means a sensitisation visit, we don’t mind going round because for us, the visually impaired persons, education is key to our success, anything that will hinder us from achieving this we will not take it.

“Also with the increment in the tuition fees, that has discouraged our members from going back to school. I want to suggest that since the government want our children to be out of the streets, there should be free education for all persons with disabilities in all the tertiary institutions,” he said.

He, therefore, advocated for a good working environment saying that PWDs most times lacked some assisting devices that would make them work effectively.

Declaring the Conference open, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, said the Federal government was paying attention to ensure that every member of the society have equal access to education.

Mamman said that equal opportunity to higher education must begin with inclusivity while calling on tertiary institutions, their communities on inclusive access for PWDs.

“We must work by focusing on an accessible learning environment where physical appropriate environment is needed and an inclusive curriculum for all students.

“Support services should be readily available in the institutions, faculty and staff training who will be sensitive to the need of the diversity must be put into consideration.

“All information from application processes in the format that will suite the PWDs must also be ensured,” he said.

The Ministry however promised to continue in the delivery of President Bola Tinubu’s mandates by focusing on policies that promote inclusivity and unity.

In the same vein, the Chairman,of the House of Representatives Committee on Disability, Dr Bashiru Daudu said the house would soon commence raising awareness on the Disability Act 2018.

Daudu said that the committee would start implementation of the act in January 2024 saying this would address the needs of PWDs in the country.

Also, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, Senator Ahmad Kaita, pledged to explore innovative funding to ensure all Nigerians have equal opportunity to higher education.

Students Loan: CONUA President Sends Message To President Tinubu

The National President of Congress Of University Academics (CONUA), Niyi Sunmonu, has emphasised the need for actions to complement the commitments of President Bola Tinubu’s administration on various policies such as student loans.

Sunmonu spoke on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics when asked to comment on the performance of Tinubu’s administration with regard to its early-days enactment of the Students Loan Act.

The CONUA president emphasised the need for concrete measures to match the government’s promises as well as the importance of action by referring to the congress’ objections, which he said it submitted to the government in August.

“The student loan is about promises; it is about pronouncements. We need to see it in action and see how it works,” he said.

Sunmonu decried that the legislative summit held by the House of Representatives last month did not have “the sub-unions” represented.

“If any union would be there, we must be part of those that would look at that because we are a player,” he said.

“All these issues, when they take them on board and we start seeing the action, we can then evaluate the action.”

One of the key issues Sunmonu raised was the loan’s eligibility requirements.

“Part of it is the conditioning for accessing the loan. Part of it is the committee that will consider those that will apply for the loan,” he stated

  • Tribunal Strikes Out Rhodes-Vivour, LP From Jandor’s Petition Over Lagos Gov Election

Tribunal Strikes Out Rhodes-Vivour, LP From Jandor’s Petition Over Lagos Gov Election

The Lagos State Governorship Election Tribunal has struck out the Labour Party and its candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, from the petition of his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Olajide Adediran popularly known as Jandor, against the recent governorship election.

Jandor is challenging the return of Babajide SanwoOlu and Obafemi Hamzat in the March 18 governorship election in Lagos State.

Shortly after the announcement of appearances by all lawyers and parties in the case at Monday’s proceeding, the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Arum Ashom, announced that the court would first deliver judgment in the case of the PDP & its candidate before giving its judgment in the petition of the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

Justice Ashom also yielded the floor to his brother judge, Justice Mikail Abdullahi to read the judgment on behalf of the panel.

The third judge on the panel is Justice Igho Braimoh.

The tribunal, in its judgment read by Justice Abdullahi, first dwelt on the preliminary objections filed by the parties.

The first objection taken is whether the 3rd Respondent, the Deputy Governor of Lagos, Obafemi Hamzat is a separate and distinct candidate from the 2nd respondent, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The tribunal was also asked to determine whether the deputy governor could be listed as a respondent in the petition.

The Tribunal noted that this issue has been decided in a number of cases and went on to hold that a deputy governor and governor are not separate candidates and they are not required to pay a separate security deposit.

In the second objection, the tribunal was asked to decide whether a person who lost an election could be joined as a respondent in an election petition.

Jandor had joined the Candidate of the Labour Party, Rhodes-Vivour as a respondent in his petition. Citing a list of decided cases, the tribunal agreed that a petition is contemplated to be filed between the winner and the loser of an election and not between two persons who lost.

The tribunal therefore upheld the preliminary objection and subsequently struck out the name of the 5th respondent, Rhodes-Vivour from the petition filed by Jandor. The tribunal also expunged from its records all exhibits tendered in evidence by Rhodes-Vivour in the petition filed by Jandor.

The tribunal went on to hold that Rhodes-Vivour cannot subsequently go on to challenge any part of the judgment of the Jandor’s petition or else he becomes a meddlesome interloper.

In a similar vein, the Tribunal held that the 6th respondent, the Labour Party ought not to have made a respondent in Jandor & the PDP’s petition. The name of the party was subsequently struck out for being improperly joined. All evidence and exhibits concerning the party were also expunged from the tribunal’s records.

The Tribunal however disagreed with the objections made by the APC & its candidate that the Mis joinder of the LP & its candidate was a ground for striking out the petition.

The tribunal held, “That the 5th & 6th respondent ought not to have been made respondents to the petition cannot rob the tribunal of the jurisdiction to hear the parties. The question of misjoinder cannot lead to a striking out of the petition as the proper order to make is to strike out the names of the parties”.

“Already the name of the 5th respondent has been struck out and the 6th respondent who has been found to be improperly joined is also ordered to be struck out”.

Hearing of the judgment is still underway as of the time of filing this report.

  • Atiku unveils 10 purported lies of Tinubu’s administration in 117 days

The Special Assistant on Public Communications to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Phrank Shaibu, has urged Nigerians to be weary of what he described as a deliberate ploy by the President Bola Tinubu’s administration to use propaganda to deceive citizens.

Shaibu in a statement in Abuja, on Sunday, said Nigerians shouldn’t be deceived by the apology issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale and others because “they are only sorry they got caught.”

According to him, the President’s handlers have been caught in at least 10 embarrassing lies which are part of the orchestrated propaganda siege on Nigerians over a 117 days period.

He further said, “The fact that Tinubu has more media aides than economic and security advisers is enough to prove that his administration would rely on propaganda as a state policy.

“My advice to the Nigerian media is to always fact-check any claim made by this government as this would help maintain their credibility. If the Tinubu government says it is morning, go outside to verify if the sun is shining.”

Shaibu further said, “These are the 10 lies of the Tinubu regime I have compiled so far:

“1. The first lie that was told by Bola Tinubu was in his inaugural speech, where he stated that petrol subsidy is gone. With oil prices now at $94 per barrel and naira exchanging at N1,000/$1, the price of diesel has risen to about N1,000 per litre while petrol remains at about N620 per litre. It is obvious to the discerning mind that petrol is now being subsidised, a position which all oil marketers have espoused. Nigerians should not be deceived. Tinubu’s claim that there is no subsidy is a lie from the pit of hell, and the fact that they are even hiding the information means there is no transparency, and the money is probably being stolen again.

“2. The second lie told by these charlatans was that the United Arab Emirates had lifted the visa ban on Nigerians immediately and that all Nigerians were free to visit Dubai. This lie was well celebrated by many undiscerning Nigerians whose only crime was to believe the deceptive words of an illegitimate government. UAE authorities later confirmed to CNN that it was all a lie. What a national embarrassment!

“3. A third lie told by this deceptive government is that Tinubu was the first African President to ring the NASDAQ bell. It has since been established that Malawian President, Jakaya Kikwete, rang the bell on September 21, 2011.

“4. Another lie was a statement issued by Ajuri Ngelale on August 27, 2023 where US Presidential Envoy and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Molly Phee, was quoted as saying, “President Joe Biden is asking to meet with you on the sidelines of UNGA and you are the only African leader he has requested to meet. It is a mark of his high regard for your leadership.” Well, this has turned out to be another embarrassing lie as Tinubu has departed UNGA and never met President Biden.

“5. A fifth lie was a claim made by Tinubu on the floor of NASDAQ where he stated that “We have retooled the exchange rate to a reliable, dependable one figure floating of the naira. You are free to take in your money and bring out your money.” But this is another lie from the pit of hell. The exchange rate on the I&E Window is about N780/$1, while the rate at the parallel market is about N1,000/$1. Besides, foreign airlines still have over $600m funds stuck in Nigeria. Tinubu, therefore, lied when he said “you are free to take in your money and bring out your money.”

“6. On August 14, 2023, the Nigerian government said on its official Twitter handle that the Nigerian Air Force struck terrorists gathering at Kurebe in Shiroro LGA in Niger State. The government claimed that the terrorists were neutralised. Well, Premium Times has now revealed in its latest report that this is nothing but propaganda as those who were killed were innocent civilians. Is it not tragic that the Bola Tinubu administration has now infected the military with its lies? Indeed, once the head of the fish is rotten, the body cannot escape corruption.

“7. As part of Bola Tinubu’s propaganda programme, the Central Bank of Nigeria said on September 6, 2023 that within two weeks, it would inject $10 billion into the foreign exchange market to clear the FX backlog. Days after the deadline passed, not a single cent has been injected into the system as the naira continues its free fall. The institution that Tinubu’s leadership cannot destroy does not exist.

“8. In his inaugural speech, Tinubu said, “As your President, I shall serve with prejudice towards none.” But this has turned out to be another barefaced lie. Tinubu has been running a government of the clannish, by the clannish and for the clannish, with all key appointments in every sector going to a section of the country including CBN, FIRS, customs, army, police, immigration while he himself is the petroleum and gas minister. Tinubu appointed 10 ministers from the southwest and only five from the southeast. If this isn’t prejudice, I don’t know what it is.

“9. Last month, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited claimed they had obtained an Afrexim loan of $3bn with which it would help stabilise the naira. We raised the alarm that it was all a ruse to deceive Nigerians. Now, we have been justified as the naira is now trading at $1/N1,000 on the black market, while Afrexim Bank has refused to speak on it. This was just audio money.

“10. Perhaps the biggest scam and deceit of the Tinubu administration was the Student Loan Act, which he signed on June 12. The new law provides loans for students’ tuition only. It doesn’t cover any other educational expenses. After the law was signed, all federal government schools began increasing school fees. But Dele Alake, the Special Adviser on Media as he then was, said in a statement that tuition in all government schools remains free and that the only fees that were increased were accommodation, laboratory, library and other costs. So if tuition is free and the Students Loan Act covers only tuition fee, that means the Student Loan Act is pointless, and no money will be released. In essence, Tinubu’s government has prodded government schools to increase fees while no loans will be given to the students. This is the height of deception and wickedness.”
