Nigeria’s university system has recorded a major international showing, with 29 institutions making the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings — while Covenant University, the University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) emerged as the country’s highest-ranked universities.
The latest ranking places the three institutions in the 801–1,000 global band, putting them at the forefront of Nigeria’s representation among thousands of universities assessed worldwide.
The development marks a significant moment for Nigeria’s higher education sector, as the number of Nigerian universities appearing on the global ranking increased from 24 in the previous edition to 29.
Covenant, UI, UNILAG Lead the Pack
Covenant University, UI and UNILAG jointly occupied the highest position recorded by a Nigerian university in the 2027 ranking, falling within the 801–1,000 bracket.
Their performance places the three institutions ahead of other Nigerian universities that featured in lower global bands.
The ranking also highlighted different areas of strength among Nigerian institutions. UNILAG recorded Nigeria’s highest research-quality score at 67.8, while Covenant University recorded the country’s highest score for industry engagement.
More Nigerian Universities Make the Global List
Other Nigerian universities featured across various ranking bands.
Among them are:
- Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) — 1,001–1,200
- Bayero University Kano (BUK) — 1,001–1,200
- Landmark University — 1,001–1,200
- University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) — 1,001–1,200
- Babcock University — 1,201–1,400
- Osun State University — 1,201–1,400
- University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) — 1,201–1,400
- Federal University of Technology, Minna — 1,401–1,600
- Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) — 1,401–1,600
- Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) — 1,401–1,600
Five institutions were also newly represented in the ranking, including Osun State University, University of Maiduguri, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Kwara State University and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
How the Universities Were Assessed
THE’s 2027 ranking evaluated universities using 17 performance indicators covering five major areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry.
The methodology is designed to measure universities beyond academic reputation, taking into account research influence, teaching environment, international collaboration and links with industry.
Global Picture
The 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, making it one of the most extensive global assessments of higher education institutions.
At the global level, the University of Oxford retained the number-one position, while the University of Cape Town emerged as the highest-ranked university in sub-Saharan Africa.
For Nigeria, however, the headline is the growing number of institutions entering the global ranking — with Covenant University, UI and UNILAG leading the country’s 2027 charge.
The development is expected to further intensify competition among Nigerian universities for global recognition, research visibility, international partnerships and stronger positions in future editions of the ranking.
