The Federal Government has unveiled a unified national framework for skills development as part of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to build a globally competitive workforce, tackle unemployment and accelerate economic growth.
The initiative is designed to harmonise existing skills acquisition and vocational training programmes implemented by various ministries, departments and agencies into a coordinated national system. Government officials said the reform will improve efficiency, eliminate duplication, expand access to quality training and ensure that graduates acquire industry-relevant skills.
According to the Federal Government, the unified framework aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s human capital development objectives by equipping young Nigerians with practical and digital skills required in today’s labour market. The programme is also expected to strengthen collaboration between government, the private sector, educational institutions and development partners to produce a workforce capable of meeting local and global demands.
Officials noted that standardising training curricula, certification and quality assurance across skills development programmes will enhance the credibility of vocational qualifications and improve employment opportunities for participants.
The government added that the initiative will support entrepreneurship, promote innovation and increase productivity across key sectors of the economy, including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, technology and the creative industry.
The reform forms part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to reduce youth unemployment, bridge Nigeria’s skills gap and position the country’s workforce for emerging opportunities in the digital economy.
Stakeholders have welcomed the move, describing it as a significant step toward creating a more coordinated and sustainable skills development ecosystem capable of driving inclusive economic growth.
