ABUJA, July 3, 2026 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled the Power Force Programme, a Federal Government initiative aimed at training 5,000 young Nigerians in smart meter installation and related technical skills as part of efforts to accelerate electricity sector reforms, create jobs, and eliminate estimated billing.
The programme, launched under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, is expected to equip participants with practical skills needed to support the nationwide rollout of smart electricity meters.
According to the Presidency, the initiative is designed to address the shortage of skilled meter installers, expand access to prepaid metering, improve transparency in electricity billing, and create sustainable employment opportunities for Nigerian youths.
President Tinubu said the programme reflects his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment while tackling one of the major challenges facing the nation’s power sector.
The first phase of the training will begin in Abuja before expanding to the six geopolitical zones. Training will be delivered by the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), while the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) will certify successful participants and ensure compliance with industry standards.
Graduates of the programme are expected to be linked with electricity distribution companies, meter manufacturers, and other stakeholders within the power sector for employment and business opportunities.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described the initiative as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s young population, noting that participants would receive industry-recognised training and certification capable of opening doors to long-term careers in the electricity value chain.
Applications for the first cohort are scheduled to open on Friday, July 4, 2026, and will remain open for two weeks.
Interested applicants can obtain further information and submit their applications through the official Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) portal www.pmi.com.ng once registration opens.
