IBADAN, Nigeria — Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, and members of his security team on Thursday came under attack by suspected armed herdsmen during a forest operation in Oyo State.
According to Vanguard, the incident occurred as Igboho and his team were combing forests in the state in support of ongoing efforts to locate pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area.
A media aide to Igboho said the team was ambushed by suspected herdsmen who opened fire on them deep inside the forest. The operatives reportedly returned fire, forcing the attackers to retreat after a brief gun battle.
The aide disclosed that no member of Igboho’s team was killed or injured in the attack, adding that the operation continued after the gunmen fled.

The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday, June 25, 2026, amid heightened security concerns in Oyo State following the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers.
The latest development underscores the growing security challenges confronting communities across the state, where local vigilante groups and other community-based security outfits have intensified support for efforts aimed at rescuing kidnapped victims and curbing criminal activities in forested areas.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the reported ambush.
