Mathematician Who Predicted Last Three World Cup Winners Tips Netherlands for 2026 Glory

German mathematician and economist Joachim Klement has predicted that the Netherlands national football team will win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, extending a remarkable streak that has already seen him correctly forecast the winners of the last three editions of football’s biggest tournament.

Klement’s prediction has generated widespread attention across the football world because his statistical model accurately identified Germany national football team as champions in 2014, France national football team in 2018, and Argentina national football team in 2022.

According to the latest projection, the Dutch side are expected to defeat Portugal national football team in the final after overcoming Spain national football team in the semi-finals. The model also predicts Portugal will eliminate England national football team in the other semi-final clash.

Klement developed the model by combining football statistics with economic and demographic indicators. The formula reportedly considers FIFA rankings, population size, GDP per capita, football culture, geography and an element of randomness designed to reflect the unpredictable nature of football.

Interestingly, the economist has repeatedly warned fans against treating the predictions as guarantees. Klement previously explained that the project originally began as an experiment aimed at demonstrating the limitations of forecasting models in sports.

His first major breakthrough came ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, when his model predicted Germany would lift the trophy despite widespread skepticism over the chances of a European nation winning in South America. Germany eventually defeated Argentina in the final to claim the title.

Four years later, Klement again stunned observers by correctly projecting France as champions of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. France, inspired by Kylian Mbappé, defeated Croatia in the final to secure their second world title.

The streak continued at Qatar 2022 when his model backed Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, to emerge victorious. Argentina eventually defeated France in one of the most dramatic World Cup finals in history.

With three successful predictions in succession, Klement’s latest forecast for the 2026 tournament has sparked intense debate among football fans and analysts. However, several other prediction systems and football analysts still consider Spain and France among the strongest favourites for the competition.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and will feature an expanded 48-team format for the first time in the tournament’s history. :::
