A tragic incident has thrown residents of Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State into mourning after suspected gunmen allegedly beheaded a female nursing student identified as Wendy Achumba.

The incident reportedly happened on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at her private off-campus apartment in Umulogho, Obowo LGA. Reports indicate that the victim’s lifeless body was discovered in the afternoon, with visible signs of brutal violence and her throat allegedly slit by the attackers.
Achumba was said to be a student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho. Sources disclosed that she had completed her Midwifery programme and was undergoing Post Basic training before the attack occurred. She was reportedly from Ngwa area of Abia State.
Residents who discovered the body reportedly raised alarm, attracting angry youths and community members to the scene. Witnesses described the killing as shocking, noting that the deceased was known to be quiet and focused on her studies.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday, May 22, 2026. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said officers visited the scene immediately after receiving the report and recovered the body, which was later deposited in a morgue.
According to the police, investigations have commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing, while a manhunt has been launched for those responsible. Authorities also confirmed that one suspect had been arrested and was undergoing preliminary questioning to aid the investigation.
