Fresh data released from the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) admission statistics has revealed the institutions most preferred by candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions this year.
According to figures linked to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board admission database, Lagos State University emerged as the most selected first-choice institution among candidates, followed by University of Lagos and University of Ilorin.
The ranking reflects the growing competition for admission into top federal and state universities across the country, with candidates largely favouring institutions known for academic stability, reputation, infrastructure, and strong employability records.
Top 10 Most Preferred Schools in 2026 UTME
- Lagos State University — about 70,080 applicants
- University of Lagos — about 58,645 applicants
- University of Ilorin — about 56,758 applicants
- Federal University Oye-Ekiti — about 52,108 applicants
- Nnamdi Azikiwe University — about 51,487 applicants
- University of Ibadan — about 47,571 applicants
- University of Nigeria, Nsukka — about 46,273 applicants
- University of Benin — about 45,868 applicants
- Obafemi Awolowo University — about 45,777 applicants
- Federal University Lafia — about 42,962 applicants
Education analysts say the trend shows that many candidates still prefer first-generation federal universities and well-established state institutions despite the increasing number of universities in the country.
Observers also noted the rising popularity of newer federal universities such as Federal University Oye-Ekiti and Federal University Lafia, which continue to attract thousands of applicants due to expanding academic programmes and perceived admission opportunities.
The development comes as over 2.24 million candidates reportedly registered for the 2026 UTME nationwide, making this year’s admission process one of the most competitive in recent times.
