Tragedy struck on Sunday evening as a final-year part-time student of University of Benin was reportedly shot dead by suspected gunmen near the institution’s Ugbowo main gate.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, May 10, 2026, shortly after the victim finished writing his semester examination and was leaving the campus in his GLK SUV.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers trailed the student before opening fire on him near the university entrance, causing panic among students and residents in the area. A female student was also reportedly struck by a stray bullet during the attack and rushed to hospital for treatment.
Authorities are yet to officially confirm the identity of the deceased, while preliminary reports suggest the killing may be linked to cult-related violence outside the campus environment.
