The Federal Government has commenced interviews for shortlisted Nigerian applicants seeking to secure the prestigious 2027/2028 Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP), with more than 2,000 applications received for the competitive selection exercise.
The interview exercise, which commenced on Monday, November 2, 2026, is expected to run until Thursday, November 5, 2026, across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
The Federal Ministry of Education disclosed this in an official announcement, explaining that the selection process is designed to identify outstanding Nigerian scholars for nomination to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom.
According to the Ministry, the government is placing strong emphasis on academic excellence, quality research and the ability of successful candidates to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s national development.
Three Major Areas Candidates Will Be Assessed
Speaking on the selection process, Dr Folake Olatunji-David, Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, highlighted three major considerations guiding the assessment of applicants.
They include:
1. Academic Excellence: Candidates must demonstrate strong academic backgrounds and the intellectual ability required to undertake postgraduate studies successfully.
2. Quality of Study Plans: Applicants are expected to present clear, convincing and relevant study or research plans, explaining the importance of their proposed programmes.
3. Contribution to National Development: Candidates must demonstrate how the knowledge, skills and expertise they intend to acquire in the United Kingdom will contribute to solving Nigeria’s development challenges.
What Shortlisted Candidates Should Expect
The nomination interview is a face-to-face assessment conducted by a national panel comprising professors, experienced scholars and retired education-sector directors.
Shortlisted applicants are expected to demonstrate their academic competence, research interests, leadership potential and understanding of how their proposed courses align with Nigeria’s development priorities.
Candidates should also be prepared to defend their choice of course, explain why they deserve the scholarship and demonstrate how they intend to apply their acquired knowledge after completing their studies.
Applicants are advised to follow the specific interview dates, venues and instructions communicated in their official invitations.
Over 2,000 Applications Received
The Federal Ministry of Education disclosed that more than 2,000 applications were received through its Electronic Application System (EAS) for the 2027/2028 scholarship selection.
The large number of applications underscores the competitiveness of the programme and the importance of the national nomination exercise.
The Ministry also disclosed that 56 Nigerian beneficiaries of the Commonwealth Master’s and PhD scholarships commenced their academic programmes in the United Kingdom in September 2026.
What Happens After the Interview?
The national interview is part of Nigeria’s nomination process. Candidates who emerge successful will be recommended for further consideration by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom.
It is important to note that participating in the Nigerian interview does not automatically guarantee a scholarship award. Final selection remains subject to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s assessment and approval.
Why the Commonwealth Scholarship Matters
The Commonwealth Scholarship provides opportunities for eligible candidates from Commonwealth countries, including Nigeria, to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.
Beyond offering access to quality international education, the programme is intended to develop skilled professionals, researchers and future leaders who can contribute to the development of their home countries.
For the shortlisted Nigerian applicants, the ongoing interviews represent a crucial stage in their quest to secure one of the prestigious international scholarship opportunities.
