National Youth Service Corps members across Nigeria are facing growing accommodation difficulties after leaving orientation camps and reporting to their Places of Primary Assignment.
The challenge, according to a recent report by Vanguard, is particularly linked to the high cost of renting accommodation in many communities where corps members are posted. For many young graduates, the cost of securing a room or apartment can consume a significant portion of their monthly allowance.
Unlike their period in orientation camps, where accommodation is provided, corps members are generally expected to make arrangements for where they will live after resuming at their places of primary assignment.
The situation can be more difficult for corps members posted to major cities and expensive urban centres, where rents and other housing-related expenses have continued to rise.
The accommodation challenge also raises concerns about the welfare of corps members, especially those posted far from their states of origin and without relatives or close contacts in their places of deployment.
In July 2026, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, said organisations that fail to provide accommodation and transportation for corps members could face blacklisting by the scheme.
The development underscores calls for employers and relevant authorities to take greater responsibility for the welfare of corps members serving across the country.
For many corps members, the question is no longer simply where they will serve, but where they will affordably and safely live while carrying out their national service.
