Ile-Ife, September 16, 2026 —
The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has expressed deep sadness over the death of Oluwole Oluwaseun, a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
The university made the disclosure in a statement made available to Vreporters on Wednesday by its spokesperson , Mr Olanrewaju Abiodun.
According to him, the institution received information at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, concerning an emergency involving the student at an apartment in the Damico Area, Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
He added that,the institution’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team immediately proceeded to the location after receiving the report.
The Nigeria Police was also contacted, while officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined university security personnel at the scene.
The student was subsequently taken to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.
The university said it was concerned about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and had handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police.
The police have commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
OAU also said the appropriate student affairs authorities had been notified for necessary follow-up, particularly regarding the welfare and support of students who may have been affected by the tragedy.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased student’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues.
He also expressed concern for members of the university community who may be emotionally affected by the incident.
The university urged students and other members of the OAU community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information or speculation while the police investigation continues.
Management further encouraged students experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help promptly from trusted individuals and appropriate university support structures.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of staff and students, stressing that “no student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone.”
The university assured the community that the appropriate authorities are handling the matter and that further information, where necessary and appropriate, would be communicated through official channels.
