The Federal Government has unveiled the Tinubu Light Initiative (TLI), a nationwide renewable-energy programme designed to provide affordable and cleaner electricity to one million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria.
The initiative was unveiled by the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) during the National Showcase of the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026 in Abuja.
According to the government, the programme is aimed at tackling one of the major challenges confronting Nigerian businesses—high energy costs and dependence on petrol and diesel generators.
The NBTI Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kazeem Raji, said the initiative would deploy renewable-energy technologies, innovative financing models and strategic partnerships to make clean electricity more accessible to MSMEs.
He said the programme is expected to create more than 50,000 direct jobs, promote local manufacturing and accelerate the adoption of renewable-energy solutions across the country.
What the Initiative Means for Nigerian Businesses
The Tinubu Light Initiative is expected to help MSMEs reduce their reliance on expensive diesel and petrol generators, thereby lowering operating and production costs.
Government officials said businesses could redirect savings from energy expenditure towards expansion, employment, equipment and other productive investments.
The programme is also expected to strengthen Nigeria’s renewable-energy ecosystem by encouraging local assembly and manufacturing of clean-energy equipment, while creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs and skilled workers.
Why MSMEs Are Being Targeted
MSMEs form a critical part of Nigeria’s economic structure but have long struggled with unreliable electricity and the high cost of self-generation.
For many small businesses, expenditure on fuel and generator maintenance significantly increases the cost of production and services. The Federal Government says the new initiative is intended to address that challenge by making cleaner and more affordable energy solutions available at scale.
50,000 Jobs Expected
Beyond providing electricity, the initiative is projected to generate more than 50,000 direct jobs through renewable-energy deployment, local manufacturing, installation, maintenance and other activities within the clean-energy value chain.
The Federal Government says the programme is part of the broader Renewed Hope Agenda and its strategy of using technology, innovation and entrepreneurship to drive economic growth and industrialisation.
The success of the initiative, however, will depend on effective implementation, accessible financing and ensuring that the targeted MSMEs can actually obtain and maintain the renewable-energy systems.
If successfully implemented, the Tinubu Light Initiative could represent a major shift for Nigerian small businesses from dependence on costly fossil-fuel generators towards cleaner, more predictable and potentially cheaper sources of electricity.
