FG Raises Red Flag for Job Seekers, Reveals Costly Mistakes That Can Ruin Government Job Applications

Abuja, Nigeria | Tuesday, July 28, 2026

The Federal Government has again warned Nigerians seeking employment in the public service to avoid common mistakes that could lead to automatic disqualification from federal recruitment exercises.

The advisory comes as interest in Federal Government jobs continues to rise, with thousands of applicants preparing for recruitment into Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). The warning follows recent government efforts to combat recruitment fraud and educate applicants on legitimate hiring processes.

According to the government, many qualified candidates lose employment opportunities each year because they fail to follow application guidelines or fall victim to avoidable errors during the recruitment process.

Mistakes That Can Cost Applicants a Government Job

  1. Submitting multiple applications: Applicants who submit more than one application for the same vacancy risk automatic disqualification.
  2. Providing false or inaccurate information: Any inconsistency in personal details, educational qualifications or work history may lead to disqualification and possible legal consequences.
  3. Uploading incorrect or unreadable documents: Blurred certificates, incomplete credentials or wrong file uploads can prevent proper verification.
  4. Ignoring eligibility requirements: Applying for positions without meeting the required qualifications, age limit or professional criteria reduces the chances of being shortlisted.
  5. Missing application deadlines: Government recruitment portals usually close automatically at the deadline, leaving no room for late submissions.
  6. Using fake recruitment websites: Applicants are advised to apply only through the official recruitment portal specified by the recruiting agency and avoid paying money to fraudsters promising employment.
  7. Failing to review applications before submission: Errors in names, contact details, dates or uploaded documents can affect an applicant’s eligibility.

Government’s Advice

The Federal Government urged prospective applicants to carefully read recruitment guidelines, prepare all required documents before starting an application and regularly monitor official government channels for updates.

It also advised job seekers to retain copies of their application details and frequently check their email addresses and official recruitment portals for information on shortlisting, aptitude tests and interviews.

The government reiterated that federal recruitment is based on transparency and merit, warning that no individual or organisation can legitimately guarantee employment in exchange for money or influence. It also stressed that the Federal Character Commission does not recruit workers into federal ministries or agencies but only monitors compliance with the Federal Character Principle during recruitment exercises.
