Don’t Reject ₦100 Note, CBN Tells Nigerians Amid Rising Confusion

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has cautioned Nigerians against rejecting the ₦100 banknote, reaffirming that the denomination remains legal tender and is valid for all transactions across the country.

The apex bank issued the clarification following reports that some traders, transport operators, business owners and members of the public have been refusing to accept the ₦100 note over claims that it has been withdrawn from circulation.

Describing the development as misleading and unlawful, the CBN stressed that it has not announced the withdrawal or demonetisation of the ₦100 banknote.

According to the bank, every genuine ₦100 note issued by the CBN remains legal tender and should be accepted for the purchase of goods and services, as well as other legitimate financial transactions.

The CBN warned that rejecting any valid naira denomination violates the provisions of the law and could undermine confidence in Nigeria’s national currency.

It urged market associations, transport unions, retailers, financial institutions and the general public to disregard false information circulating on social media and rely only on official CBN communications for updates on the status of the country’s currency.

The apex bank further advised Nigerians to continue accepting and using the ₦100 note without hesitation, adding that no directive has been issued withdrawing the denomination from circulation.

The clarification comes amid renewed misinformation over the validity of certain naira notes, with the CBN reassuring Nigerians that the ₦100 note remains in active circulation and retains its full legal tender status nationwide.
