British police have come under mounting criticism after body-camera footage revealed officers handcuffed an 18-year-old university student as he lay dying from stab wounds following a violent attack in Southampton.

The victim, Henry Nowak, a first-year student at the University of Southampton, was fatally stabbed on December 3, 2025. However, controversy erupted after evidence presented during the murder trial showed that responding officers initially treated him as a suspect rather than a victim after the attacker falsely claimed he had been racially abused.
Video footage released after the trial showed the teenager informing officers that he had been stabbed and repeatedly expressing distress while bleeding heavily. Despite his condition, officers placed him in handcuffs before later realizing the severity of his injuries.
The attacker, Vickrum Digwa, was subsequently found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Following the conviction, Hampshire Constabulary publicly apologized to the victim’s family and referred the conduct of the officers involved to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for further investigation.
The incident has triggered widespread debate across the United Kingdom regarding police decision-making, treatment of victims, and accountability within law enforcement. Senior British politicians, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, described the footage as disturbing and called for full accountability.
