Explainer: How Nigerians Can Enjoy FG’s Free Digital TV Without Monthly Subscription

The President Tinubu-led government has rolled out FreeTV, a new digital television platform that will allow millions of Nigerians to access more than 100 television channels without paying monthly subscription fees.

The initiative, launched under Nigeria’s Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme, is aimed at expanding access to quality television content, promoting local broadcasting and ensuring that more Nigerians enjoy free digital entertainment and information services.

Who Can Access FreeTV?

The service is open to all Nigerians with compatible television equipment. Viewers do not necessarily need to buy a new television set to enjoy the platform.

Those whose television sets have built-in DVB-T2 digital tuners can simply connect an antenna and scan for available channels. Owners of older analogue television sets can also access the service by connecting a compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoder.

How to Start Watching

To enjoy the FreeTV service, viewers should:

  • Confirm whether their television has a built-in DVB-T2 tuner or obtain a compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoder.
  • Connect a UHF antenna for terrestrial reception or a compatible satellite dish where applicable.
  • Open the television or decoder settings and perform an automatic channel scan to detect available FreeTV channels.
  • Alternatively, users can access the service through the FreeTV mobile application on supported smartphones and tablets.

What Viewers Will Enjoy

According to the Federal Government, the platform will offer access to more than 100 channels covering a wide range of interests, including:

  • National and international news;
  • Sports;
  • Movies and entertainment;
  • Music;
  • Children’s programmes;
  • Educational content; and
  • Indigenous language channels, including Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo programming.

The government says the initiative is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s broadcasting industry while providing quality content to citizens at no recurring cost.

No Monthly Subscription

One of the biggest attractions of the new platform is that it is completely free to watch. Unlike subscription-based pay-TV services, FreeTV does not require viewers to pay monthly access fees after acquiring the necessary reception equipment.

Nationwide Coverage

The Federal Government said the service will be delivered through digital terrestrial television, satellite broadcasting and a dedicated mobile application to ensure that Nigerians in both urban and rural communities have access to the platform.

The launch of FreeTV marks another milestone in Nigeria’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, with authorities expressing confidence that the initiative will improve access to information, education and entertainment for millions of households across the country.
