Abia Youths, Security Operatives Force Kidnappers to Abandon Victims After 10 Days in Captivity

The combined efforts of community youths and security operatives have resulted in the rescue of two kidnap victims in Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, after spending about 10 days in captivity.

The victims, identified as Mrs. Onyinyechi Ekechukwu and 20-year-old Izuchukwu Okechi, were abducted on June 10, 2026, near Nkpu-Ala along the Umuahia–Uzuakoli Road while returning from their farm.

According to the Abia State Police Command, the kidnappers later contacted the victims’ families and demanded a ransom of ₦10 million for their release.

Following the abduction, local youths immediately mobilised alongside police operatives, vigilante members, forest guards and local hunters in a coordinated search operation that lasted several days. The search teams combed forests and surrounding communities, relying on community intelligence and local knowledge of the terrain.

After nearly 10 days of sustained pressure from the rescue teams, the kidnappers reportedly abandoned the victims and fled upon sighting the approaching security operatives and volunteers.

Confirming the development on Saturday, June 20, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said officers attached to the Ohuhu Divisional Police Headquarters acted swiftly after receiving information about the incident.

She disclosed that the kidnappers abandoned the victims as the rescue team closed in on their location.

“The victims were successfully rescued. One of them sustained injuries to the head and hand and was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention,” Chinaka said.

The police spokesperson added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and dismantle the criminal network behind the abduction.

Residents of the area have commended the courage of the youths and the prompt response of security personnel, describing the operation as a demonstration of the effectiveness of community-security collaboration in tackling insecurity.

The rescue, which came 10 days after the victims were abducted, highlights the growing role of community participation in supporting law enforcement agencies in the fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
