Police probe murder of suspected cult leader in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has said one Adedipe Adeyinkan, popularly known as “Agali,” was shot dead on Saturday at the National Stadium Bridge, Surulere.

The command in a post on X on Sunday, said medical officers at the Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, where he was rushed to, pronounced him dead, adding that investigation into the incident was ongoing.

The command wrote, “The command is aware of the shooting incident involving Adedipe Adeyinkan, popularly known as “Agali,” which occurred on 11th April 2026 at about 11:30pm on National Stadium Bridge inward Iponri. The victim was rushed to Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, where he was confirmed dead. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The command was reacting to a video shared earlier in the day by @naijaconfra, showing a group of people inspecting a damaged vehicle on the road.

According to the X user, the victim, said to be the leader of the Buccaneers (BAN) cult group in Surulere, and also allegedly worked for some politicians under the ruling All Progressives Congress, was shot and killed in his car by a rival cult group.

The X user wrote, “IPONRI, SURULERE: Last night, the number one man of the Buccaneers (BAN) cult group, named Agali, was killed in the Iponri area of Surulere. Agali was the biggest, most feared, and most influential figure in the Buccaneers cult in Surulere. He was described as nice, friendly, rich, very influential, rugged, and also feared in the area. He also worked for APC politicians.

“Reports indicate that Agali was said to be supporting a female candidate in the upcoming election, as opposed to a popular male incumbent candidate in Surulere, and was on the opposing APC side.

“Although Buccaneers have confirmed that a particular rival cult group was used to carry out the attack, many have attributed Agali’s death to politics. Agali, whose axis was in the Shitta/Akere (le) area, was reportedly shot while driving his car in the Iponri area.

“Tension is extremely high, as Buccaneers are planning extreme chaos against the rival group they mentioned and are also vowing violence in the upcoming elections. There is heavy police presence in the area, as residents spotted over 15 police cars this morning. Stay safe.”
